Munktiki
11 Oct 2013
I actually was last at Munktiki's on 10/11/2013 to pick up a Johnny Ku mug after purchasing online -- at their Portland location before they moved to Astoria. I was here for a couple of tiki parties as well back when they were in Portland. I've been to Astoria, but not since they established there. Hope to get there one day soon.
The Alibi
14 July 2013
I swung by here during the weekend of the 2013 Tiki Kon if memory serves. I had been here before on at least a couple of occasions but it was not my go-to bar since Trader Vic's and Hale Pele had better food and drinks at the time and it seemed like The Alibi was always doing karaoke which is not my thing. Still, I admire all the interior Witco detail. Classic!
Hale Pele
25 Aug 2012
I lived in Portland from 2011 to 2015 while my wife was working for LAIKA animation on The Boxtrolls project. I went to Hale Pele at least once or twice a month for a few years, starting the month it opened in 2012 and until I moved back to Los Angeles in 2015. My last visit was probably June 1st, 2015. I was about halfway through both my water bearer (cocktail list) and fire drinker (rum list) but never completed either one. Sadly, I do that at every bar that has a customer incentive drink list. I can never focus. Took me forever to pick a major in college too. I guess some people never learn! Hale Pele's unique round-the-world presentation of their rums taught me a lot and introduced me to a wider range than I might have otherwise explored from purchases at liquor stores. I heartily recommend a trip there!
Thatch
5 Aug 2012
I visited the last month it was around, right before it closed and re-opened as Hale Pele. I seem to remember that we swung by the weekend of Tiki Kon 2012 and picked up a couple of their cannibal mugs as well -- one of which I have still today.
Mojave Oasis
17 Oct 2011
I camped here with my family in a tent and took part in the cocktail contest, where I won Second Place for a Garam Masala based concoction. The prize was a bottle of Asom Broso Tequila and a cool tiki pendant. Joseph, my son, really enjoyed fishing during the event. It was a great weekend, overall!
Tiki No
5 Mar 2011
This is just a guess at when I might have first visited. I know it was in early 2011 after they had been open for a while. I think I stopped by after already having visited the Tonga Hut. I've been back a couple of times since but it's not one of my regular go-to places.
Purple Orchid Exotic Tiki Lounge
5 Feb 2011
I was here with Tiki Al for his mug release of some special limited edition Bumatay mugs he had made while in China. Photo shows me in center with Liz and Al on my right and the Purple Orchid owners on my left. I've been here on several occasions, usually when they book a band I like -- I think I was here to see The Insect Surfers play a couple of times.
Kon Tiki Lounge
20 Dec 2010
Stopped here during a cross-country Christmas vacation visit. Joseph got to visit the Milan Guanko tikis.
Tonga Hut - North Hollywood
11 Dec 2010
I was here for the Tonga Hut Tiki Wonderland party on December 11th, 2010. Also picked up the first edition Big Mo Mug designed by Kirby and made by GROG.
I've been here on countless visits over the years from back when just Jeremy Fleener and his girlfriend were running it up to the present with Murph and Claudia. I completed about half the Grog Log on premises and then moved to Portland which interrupted things...so I started on the Hale Pele list and made it halfway through that before I moved back to LA. Never going to complete a list! :(
Bamboo Ben's Showroom
1 Jan 2010
I was here early in 2010 before he shut down the showroom and purchased a mug from Ben and talked for a bit. This might have been my only visit to the showroom.
The Beachcomber Cafe & Bootlegger Bar - at Crystal Cove
14 Nov 2009
Visited here with the family and picked up the green chalice mug by Tiki Farm.
Forest Lawn Cemetery - Glendale
22 Aug 2009
Ilene and I swung by on a Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks into the show. Great exhibit!
Trader Vic's - at the LA Live Complex - Los Angeles
14 June 2009
My wife and mother-in-law surprised me and took me out to Trader Vic's for an early birthday dinner. I had the pork chop and a few crab rangoon from their sampler platter. The food was great! I was totally stuffed, but at the end of the meal they brought me out a birthday bowl of coconut ice cream with chocolate and toasted coconut shavings on top. I shared it with Joe and it was the only thing that kept him sitting still for more than five seconds. High praise indeed! The rest of the time I spent chasing Joe around the restaurant to keep him out of the bar while the band was playing and to catch him so he wouldn't press his face against the super hot plate glass in front of the wood-fired ovens! He's a tornado, but we escaped with only one casualty left behind. Unfortunately, Joe got a hold of one of the tiki salt dispensers and broke the head off. Our waiter was understanding though and was much more interested in discussing drinks with me. I only had two while I was there...the Mai Tai and the Navy Grog, but both were fantastic. Ilene had a Menehune Juice. I tried it and it was okay, but a little too light for my taste. Joe liked it the best, though, because he got to play with the little plastic Menehune that came with it. That Menehune was his only souvenir from the restaurant, although he tried to steal a set of shark teeth out of the lobby. I guess he figured that if someone was going to leave it on the floor, it must be free. Anyway, to summarize: a BIG THUMBS UP! We will definitely be back again.
Don the Beachcomber - Huntington Beach
18 Apr 2009
I was at Don's on 04/18/2009 during the Tiki Magazine release party. I had also been here previously when it was Kona's & before that when it was Sam's.
Sam's Seafood - Huntington Beach
4 Aug 2007
I just went to Sam's for the first time and I had a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!
We got there early at 5:30PM on Saturday (08/04/2007) for the Mug Release Party and stayed until 7:30 or 8:00PM.
The food I had was extremely good. My wife and I started with appetizers. We had crabcakes and ribs. The ribs are very tasty, especially, and I might just make a meal off of them next time. For an entree, I had the "Almost Lobster" which is a huge skewer of jumbo shrimp with a spicy rub. It came with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies. Everything was cooked perfectly. For dessert, my wife and I shared the pineapple upside down cake. The desert came a la mode with a rather impressive "fin" of carmelized sugar on top.
To drink, I had the Navy Grog. Strong but good. The bartenders were also taking drink requests...so if you've got particular drinks that you enjoy, feel free to let them know. SoccerTiki told me he had them make a "Sven-Tiki" (page 83 in Beachbum's Intoxica) and it turned out beautifully.
I don't know what their music selection is on other nights, but for this event, we had a LIVE band. The Smoking Menehunes sure cranked out some good tunes.
Sam Gambino was really a nice guy in person. He was busy most of the evening, diligently signing prints and mugs while people crowded around to say hi.
Other good company included Holden, Squid, Tiki Al and Liz, Hiphipahula, SoccerTiki, WooHooWahine, and many many more! A good TC turn-out.
Damon's
11 June 2007
I was here for Damon's 70th Anniversary bash held on June 11th, 2007. Picked up the glass from the event and had dinner there with friends and family. I've been to Damon's several times over the years and once I even guest bartended for the evening (October 29th, 2007). :)
Tiki Farm
14 Apr 2007
I was here for their parking lot sale -- at their old location at 1305 Calle Avonzado, San Clemente. Miss these events at the Farm! Went to a few of them back in the day and even helped mix up the mai-tai mix with Holden. Swung by here a few times with Kelly Hiphipahula Reilly, too. Haven't been to the new location yet but hope to soon!
Trader Vic's - Palo Alto
29 Dec 2006
Ilene and I had lunch here. They had the best Iced Tea. It seemed out of character not to order a cocktail at a tiki place, but I like the iced tea so much I just had five re-fills of that alone. The tea came with a healthy sprig of mint and they also put a bottle of sugar syrup on the table. The Trader Vics in Beverly Hills and the one in Atlanta were pretty dark inside but this one had white-washed walls and felt like an island resort. Interestingly, they seemed to have imported all the managers and the bartender from Germany -- from a Trader Vic's there -- maybe Munich? I forget. We had a light lunch and then Ilene talked the bartender into selling us one of their trademark Trader Vic skull mugs. Then we headed out to tour the Winchester Mystery House as the next stop...

Visited here with the Ilene during the first day of our 4-day Tiki Spectacular Vacation and she had a Dr. Funk's which got her a bit tipsy.
Mission Tiki Drive-In
5 Aug 2006
I was here for the Tiki Invasion event and picked up a Tiki Diablo mug.
Voodoo Room
23 June 2006
Started going here with Ilene and our friends (Aaron & Giselle) on a weekly basis each Friday night until they suddenly closed. Good drinks from Rob and the food, especially the Tandoori Beef, was amazing! It was a bummer when they suddenly closed with no announcement because they were keeping our tiki mugs behind the counter for whenever we visited and we never got them back...
Humphrey's Half Moon Inn
7 May 2006
I was at The Bali Hai for the beginning of the 2006 Tiki Oasis and walked over to check this place out for the first time.
Crowne Plaza Hanalei Hotel
7 May 2006
I stayed here with Ilene for my first Tiki Oasis. Had a great time and this supercharged my interest in Tiki. After this, I hosted some Tiki Oasis room parties along with "Dibroc" (John Corbid). We also volunteered in later years at the Tiki Tikes/Children's Care area.
Mister Tiki's Mai Tai Lounge
6 May 2006
I was only here once or twice for dinner, coinciding with Tiki Oasis in 2006 and possibly 2007. Visit date is an approximation...
Trader Vic's - Atlanta
15 Apr 2006
I was here for a Popular Culture Association conference while I was attending school to earn my PhD. Stopped by Trader Vic's with a couple of fellow students.
Trader Vic's - Beverly Hills
9 Dec 2005
Visited here with Ilene for a nice dinner. I think I had been here once before. This would be my last time here before they closed, sadly.
Trader Vic's - Bangkok
25 May 2001
I was here with a contingent of academics from Antelope Valley College. Bangkok was a side trip in our overall journey which also took a boat down the Yellow River in China, and visited Hong Kong with the giant Tian Tan Buddha at Lantau Island. While in Bangkok we stayed at the Marriot Hotel and I literally walked through the Trader Vic's Restaurant without eating or drinking there because I was eager to do sightseeing and not into Tiki at the time. I ended up doing an elephant ride and almost lost an eye when my elephant lunged forward for a mango on the ground and an overhanging branch came at me like Final Destination!
The Outrigger Apartments
15 Nov 2000
I was here a few times to catch up on whether the tiki in the bushes was still there and what had become of the place. Never made it past the front gates, though. Usually a momentary stop on the way to Bahooka's.
Lava Lounge - Los Angeles
15 Oct 2000
I was here a few times in the early 2000s, but didn't really think of this as a tiki bar destination. I wasn't really die-hard into tiki at this time. It was always really crowded and I was usually meeting up with someone to go bar hopping or this might have been a stop during bar hopping. This visit date is just a guess at when I might have last been here.
Bahooka Ribs & Grog - Rosemead
25 Aug 1995
This was my first visit to a genuine tiki bar when I came out to live in California. My cousin Mike and his family took me and I didn't realize then that "Tiki" was a scene. I just thought it was a cool restaurant. For a time, I lived in Pasadena and this became a regular go-to restaurant for me and my family. Still miss it.
The Enchanted Tiki Room - Anaheim
25 Aug 1995
I visited here on August 25th, 1995 while visiting with my cousin and his family. This was my first visit to Disneyland.
Frankie's Tiki Oasis

I visited here along with my photographer, Casey, @2018, to do a photoshoot for The Home Bar Guide To Tropical Cocktails. Our publisher decided to cut 50 pages of planned photography from the finished book to stay in budget, so it did not make the final cut, but it is still a great bar with a marvelous host!
