Tiki Bars
Ohana - Dublin
Dublin, Ireland
Opened in January 2020. This space boasts that it is Dublin's only Tiki Bar!
Taken from Third Mind Design, who designed the space, which holds 200 people and is divided into 5 separate sections:
"Ohana Tiki Bar is located on Harcourt Street in Dublin, Ireland. The colour palette is a combination of teal, crystal blue and natural bamboo. Oversized palm leaves and pineapples are printed onto custom wallpaper and cover sections of the walls. The exterior is defined by a block colour of crystal blue, wayfinding strip from steps to entrance. The exterior walls and floor are painted black with bamboo cladding and live bamboo plants to bring a softer element. The entrance into the bar begins with a vortex style transition - characterised by mirror panels and neon-style lighting. The reception hallway uses a volcanic effect wall with a vibrant pink ‘Aloha’ greeting. The key design features of the venue are colour block sections, bamboo cladding and a mixture of contemporary and tiki furniture. Tiki heads and Easter Island style statues adorn the corners of the teal colour block rooms. The cove takes on a Caribbean element and the colour palette changes to a monochromatic tan and black. The walls are bedecked with black skulls and a hanging bamboo feature. The copper port lanterns and premium rum feature cabinets complete this look. The outdoor area features an ‘Ohana’ sign made completely from natural bamboo and decorated with soft green foliage."
The bar boasts over 200 rums, and also has a DJ booth across from the bar, so can go from lounge to nightclub space as needed.
After their initial opening, they had barely found their footing when the Corona Virus hit and they had to close for 2 years, opening once again at the end of February 2022.
Bahia Motel
Anaheim, California, United States (Closed)
Built in 1961.
This 70-room motel with pool sported a fantastic stylized moai head on its sign out front...but it was not meant to last.
The Bahia became the Henry the VIII Motel and then the Razzmatazz! Motel for a time, both of which which kept the moai head on the sign, but later in 1994, new owners decided to change the hotel entirely to a Pioneer theme, and re-named it the Covered Wagon Motel with an unimaginative "CW" initials taking the place of the moai head. At this same time, the restaurant was named Columbo's Italian Restaurant (perhaps because pioneers are known for their love of pasta?).
Bella's Mexican and then Cristi's Mexican in turn took the place of Columbo's.
The Covered Wagon was shut down by the city in March of 2022 and red tagged as unsafe to occupy. Cristi's Mexican closed in 2022 also.
The Covered Wagon was demolished in January 2023 as part of a larger effort to revitalize Beach Boulevard. The site was then slated for redevelopment with new housing.

Once located next door to the East Wind Restaurant (later named Yoshi's Japanese Restaurant).
The Pitcairn's neon sign was designed by Heathcote in 1961 and built by California Neon Products.
The hotel was demolished in 1998 as part of the City of Anaheim's "beautification" project.
Today, and as of 2021, this location appears to be a parking lot in-between the Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant and Hampton Inn and Suites.
The Tropics - at the Hotel Phillips
Kansas City, Missouri, United States (Closed)
The Tropics Lounge was a pre-tiki establishment opened sometime during World War II and was located on the third floor (they counted the basement level as #1, so the third floor today is more like the second floor or mezzanine level).
Here's a quote from the hotel's history flyer:
"After dinner, the gentlemen would retire to the third floor to the popular lounge called the Tropics. The sound of thunder was piped in and the lights fluttered and went out. A mechanical hula girl would emerge from behind the bar and dance in a grass skirt while it rained behind the bar."
Although the hotel is still running, it has undergone many remodels and it is difficult to see any sign of where the bar once was.

Tiki Tatsu-Ya
Austin, Texas, United States
Tiki Tatsu-Ya is a long-awaited tiki bar and restaurant in South Austin, Texas, that opened October 4th, 2021.
Owner is Tatsu Aikawa, who owns several restaurants in town including neighboring Ramen Tatsu-Ya, and was inspired to open a tiki bar by his brother Shion. Aikawa emphasized tiki's long tradition of incorporating Asian elements, and the heavy influence of Asian cultures on Hawaii. Wahtiki Island Lounge
Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong SAR China (Closed)
Wahtiki Island Lounge was opened in Central Hong Kong in January 2017 by owner Philip Lee. Lee's father, Shi Wah Lee, worked for Trader Vic's for many years, including managing the London Trader Vic's during the '70s-'90s, and later helping Trader Vic's open locations around Europe and the Middle East. Philip Lee continued in the family tradition by opening his own tiki bar and Polynesian restaurant. The decor included bamboo, tapa cloth, and tikis, traditional Polynesian restaurant food, and tiki drinks served in tiki mugs.
Unfortunately, the restaurant was unable to come to terms on its lease agreement and announced its closure for Saturday, August 12th, 2023.
Dobbs House Luau - Lexington
Lexington, Kentucky, United States (Closed)
Dobbs House Luau was a chain of Polynesian restaurants throughout the south. This location opened in January 1960 in the Hotel Lafayette in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Unlike other Dobbs House Luau locations, this one was sometimes advertised as the "Luau Room" or simply "Luau," only sometimes being referred to as "Dobbs House Luau." Later that same year, the hotel closed and became office space, it's not clear if or how long the restaurant remained after the hotel closure. The building still stands. Around 1980, the building was purchased by the city to house government offices.
Other Dobbs House Luau locations were in Atlanta, Memphis, Birmingham, Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, Houston, and Louisville.
The Beachcomber - London
London, United Kingdom
The Beachcomber opened in April 2013 in an underground space in London's Notting Hill. There is no connection to the historic The Beachcomber restaurant that operated in London's Mayfair area in the '60s. The bar's culinary focus is on the French Caribbean, and on the drinks side their selection of tropical cocktails make use of rhum agricole. The bar is wrapped in large-diameter bamboo, while the seating areas are lined with simple matting framed by more large bamboo.
Tikitiki Bowling Bar
New Territories, Hong Kong SAR China (Closed)
Tikitiki Bowling Alley opened on October 15, 2015 in Sai Kung, in Hong Kong's New Territories. It was a large attraction, with three bars, a restaurant and a live music venue in addition to the bowling lanes.
The Krakatoa Lanes were ten bowling lanes, topped with a massive video screen with tropical and party scenes. Light fixtures were lava inspired, and the pins and balls were fluorescent colors and lit with black light.
Sea Dogs & Mermaids was the main bar, a large bar shaped like a ship and built of rustic wood, decorated in a nautical style. A row of tikis faced into the bar area. The bar served classic tropical drink recipes a la Beachbum Berry, and a selection of their own creations, in tiki mugs.
Beach Bums & Cannibals was a fine dining restaurant. The room was ringed with carved tiki panels on eggplant purple walls, with matching purple shag throw rugs under each rustic wooden table. Candelabras and chandeliers provided the lighting.
Other areas included the Octopus's Garden, with live music acts performing in front of tiki masks; and Island of the Gods, an outdoor dining area overlooking the hills of Sai Kung, backed with a row of tall tikis.
Closed @April 2024.
