Vern's Tiki Bar - at Public Domain
18 July 2026
Vern's may not be as immersive as other tiki bars, but it was a fun place with a friendly staff and tasty drinks and food. We arrived early, so Vern's look somewhat empty in my photos, but after a short time the place filled up with laughing groups of people having a good time - all the tables filled and there was a large group standing near the bar. The drinks were very good - carefully crafted and potent. The Jet Pilot was one of the best drinks I've ever had. I should have ordered a second, but tried the Puka Punch and Mai Tai instead. For food, we had the Peanut Sesame Noodles, Cheng Du Ravioli, Pork Belly Bites, and Battered Fries. All were tasty, but those Pork Belly Bites were definitely the favorite. The cocktail and food menus do change throughout the year, so keep this in mind. The bartender was working furiously but exactingly, and we found him to be super friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The next time I'm in Minneapolis, I will definitely return to Vern's.
Revival House - Shops of Legacy - Omaha
24 June 2026
This was my first visit to any of the Revival locations. I found the decor to be quite nice, colorful and a bit on the upscale. It was a weeknight, so it was pretty quiet. I thought the drinks were a bit on the sweet side, a bit unbalanced, and the cocktail menu itself was rather limited in choices. In fact, I enjoyed the non-alcoholic juice drinks more than the cocktails I tried (Mai Tai and Exotic Bird). It seemed to me that the cocktails would appeal more to those that are used to sailing on cruise ships. Not bad, but not exceptional. Another disappointment for me was that there was no food, this was strictly a cocktail bar. Sure, there was a popcorn machine, but that was all. When in Omaha, it's best to skip this one and make the drive to the Old Market and visit Laka Lono.
The S.O.S.
9 May 2025
This was my second visit to SOS. The first was in 2019, I think. It's a smaller place, but the wait for an inside table wasn't too long for a Friday evening. I asked about a signature cocktail recommendation because I wanted something local and original, but the answer came back "the zombie and the mai tai are the most popular" which was strange, as they have the SOS Grog and the A-Ti-L Punch. :D I had both the Zombie and SOS Grog and they were tasty - but they have similar ingredients so they taste very similar. I rounded out my visit with The Goof, which is NOT the same as the Goof Punch as served at the Bali Hai. It has Jamaican rum, Nixta, and coffee and I liked it much more than I expected. I also had sips of the Pirate Republic (peppery!!) and the A-Ti-L Punch (an Agricole cocktail). The SOS isn't watering down drinks, nor are they batching drinks, and I appreciate that. I have to point out that the SOS can be loud. It's a small room with loud music and a lot of hard surfaces. Everyone is talking loudly to be heard, so it's hard to carry on a conversation.
Trader Vic's - Atlanta
8 May 2025
In all my visits to Atlanta, I had never visited the Trader Vic's and that is a crime. What a beautiful restaurant. It's all original, classy and fun. The bar area is lively, and the dining area, while large, is composed of smaller rooms that keep the vibe relaxed and intimate. We had a selection of the smaller plates this evening, and did not order entrees. We had the Cosmic Tidbits Pupu, Beef Cho Cho, Crab Rangoon, Calamari and a Poke Bowl. All were tasty! As far as cocktails, I had a Suffering Bastard and Tututupo Tiki and enjoyed both. However, I had sips of my companion's Peachtree Punch and loved it! The drinks are nice and powerful, which I've found to be true everywhere I've gone in Atlanta, and that's great! The manager, Jesus, came by our table to greet us and we later chatted with him for a while at the end of our visit. We will definitely return next April for their 50th Anniversary celebration. Can't wait!
The Bamboo Club
22 Feb 2025
Tried the Bamboo 44 Mai Tai w/ a float of Whalers and the Zombie. Nice and potent! We went for lunch. Loved the Bamboo Wings and the Breakfast Burger. Will definitely go back!
Royal Hawaiian -- from 1947 to 2006
19 Feb 2025
This is a must-do establishment for the Tiki Faithful. Absolutely gorgeous throughout. Tasty food and drinks. Tried the namesake cocktail, the Royal Hawaiian, a Three Dots and a Dash and a Banana Smuggler. Spam fries and kalua pork sliders. We had a great time, and I would go back in a heartbeat. There's free parking on the north side of the building.
Hula Hula Room - Torrance
18 Feb 2025
Had a couple of their originals - the Nor Easter and the Torrance Bird. Laid back place, but it was a Tuesday night. Wish they had a mug, but maybe someday.

How could I have known it would be my only chance to walk the halls of Xanadu…. Why didn’t I fill the car with carvings…
