The Lucky Tiki - West Hollywood
24 Oct 2024
Great, if small, hidden tiki bar that you will never find without directions! Good drinks (they serve food but the kitchen was closed after 10pm when we got there), very nice tiki decor and vibe — and we particularly appreciated that they play Hawaiian/tiki music throughout, nothing kills the illusion like a jukebox full of headbanger music. Our server, Genesis, was a doll, very friendly and took the time to answer our questions about the history of the place. And it's got some history! We will be back.
The Lost Inferno
16 Oct 2024
We had a terrific time! Were here for the One-Eyed Willy mug launch event — so of course we had to have a One-Eyed Willy to fully enjoy the moment. It's a delicious cocktail. I also had a Scorched Pina Colada, which I greatly enjoyed. The staff is notably kind and attentive, and the decor is a Goonies-themed wonderland. We will be back!
Clifton's Pacific Seas (Modern) - on Broadway - Los Angeles
12 Oct 2024
This place is South Seas heaven. Fantastic, classy decor — half Tiki, half Explorers Club — friendly staff, and best of all, delicious food and drinks, with top marks for presentation as well as taste. I had a Message in a Bottle, which came in its own ice-lined treasure chest — a slightly pricey short drink, but well worth it. I've been to about three dozen Tiki palaces by now, and Clifton's is one of the greatest experiences I've ever had at a bar. Just gorgeous.
Caliente Tropics Resort
7 May 2023
Here for Tiki Caliente! Wonderful atmosphere, good food, great music (courtesy of The Dirty Lowdown and Par Avion), and I loved the drinks. I had a Palm Beach Punch and a Trader's Chi-Chi. Very friendly staff, too!
Tonga Hut - Palm Springs
5 May 2023
Part of our Palm Springs Tiki Bar crawl during Tiki Caliente! The Palm Springs Tonga Hut is more expansive than its older North Hollywood sister, and also serves food along with its distinctive cocktails. We shared the Puu Puu Platter, which at $13 per person is a nice deal on a variety of Chinese/Polynesian appetizers. I had a Kraken the Dole Whip cocktail, and our server was kind enough to have it made special in a hollowed-out coconut after I requested it, not its usual setting. The food, drinks and decor were all fun, and there's also a wide sitting area with tables and a variety of board and card games. We played Jenga and chatted up other patrons after we'd finished our meal. Great fun!
Mothership
Date: Unknown
First time here! I'm no scholar, but I can pretty much guarantee that Mothership is the world's only outer-space themed all-Vegan Tiki bar. I didn't note the Vegan part before going to check it out for dinner and a cocktail — but I had their scallion pancake, which I quite enjoyed. I also tried their own variation on a Painkiller, called the Mindkiller — made with two kinds of rum (one of them overproof) and "Tang cordial," which seems to be their own special syrup made with the drink that astronauts drink. I liked it a lot!
Nice atmosphere, great sci-fi decor and a very friendly bartender named Javi (hope I'm spelling your name right there, buddy!) made it a pleasant visit.
Broken Compass Tiki Bar
Date: Unknown
First time here! Friendly atmosphere, good food — the cocktail menu is somewhat limited compared to many other Tiki bars in the Los Angeles area, but the bartender told me they'd be happy to make us anything "off-menu," as their bar is very well-stocked. We went on a Friday night, though, and be advised: when it's busy, they'll only seat you at a table if everyone in your party is ordering an entree, otherwise you have to sit at the bar.
The description of the decor, above, is accurate: there's more "pirate" than "tiki" about the place, but there's still plenty of Tiki decor as well, with classic Polynesian pop album covers framed along one wall, and a couple of (non-animated) perched parrots named José and Juan. We enjoyed it!
The Shag Store - Palm Springs
Date: Unknown
Visited the Shag Store during Tiki Caliente!
Disney's Polynesian Village Resort
Date: Unknown
I'm just taking a shot at the date — all I know is that my Dad first brought us to Walt Disney World when I was 10 years old, and we had breakfast one morning at the Polynesian Hotel. I visited again many years later in May 1990. What a beautiful place; I hope to go again someday.
Trader Vic's - Beverly Hills
Date: Unknown
My wife and I had dinner and drinks here at the Trader Vic's Lounge, long before I was into Tiki and oh, how I wish I could have that evening back. I was just developing a taste (late in life) for cocktails of any kind, in general, and I remember I had a Sidecar. What I'd give to go back to that moment and order a Mai Tai....
Tiki No
Date: Unknown
Visited with a couple of friends... friendly staff, modest tiki decor but pleasant, with a fairly small drink selection and no food save bags of chips. I had a Lychee Luau and liked it.
The Reef Bar - at The Caliente Tropics
Date: Unknown
Here for Tiki Caliente! Wonderful atmosphere, good food, great music (courtesy of The Dirty Lowdown and Par Avion), and I loved the drinks. I had a Palm Beach Punch and a Trader's Chi-Chi. Very friendly staff, too — for some reason, my drink came out 20 minutes later than my friends', and the waitress insisted on comping it!
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar
Date: Unknown
We lucked out and got in without a reservation, within 10 minutes of asking! Trader Sam's has a lot to live up to, with people coming there from the Enchanted Tiki Room, and it does not disappoint. I had the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Rum (basically a Painkiller) and the Krakatoa Punch, as well as plenty of apps from the bar menu — all were good. I won't spoil any of the surprises, but don't be alarmed if special effects accompany one of your drink orders!
Tangaroa Terrace
Date: Unknown
Brief visit — we were about to place an order when we got unexpected word that a table had opened up at Trader Sam's!
Humphrey's Half Moon Inn
Date: Unknown
A wonderful Tiki hotel, complete with lit torches, multiple fire pits and cushioned seats out back, and literally a one-block walk to the legendary Bali Hai restaurant. It's also a terrifically convenient place to stay for San Diego Comic-Con, with the shuttle stopping directly in front of the hotel, and one of the shorter rides in to the Convention Center. I'll be staying there again this year!
The Enchanted Tiki Room - Anaheim
Date: Unknown
Olé! Olé! It's show time!
The Enchanted Tiki Room - Orlando
Date: Unknown
I know we must have seen the Enchanted Tiki Room in 1972 when I was a little kid and we first visited Disney World, but my first memory of it was when I went as an adult in 1990... we went in on a whim, basically because there wasn't much of a line, and I had little expectation, but then, oh Lord did it take my breath away. Like so many of us, I believe the Enchanted Tiki Room was my first "Tiki" experience, and I've now been to the one in Disneyland many times. It never fails to fill me with wonder and delight.
Nalu Hawaiian Surf Bar & Grille
Date: Unknown
We actually went to the one in Rehoboth Beach! Great staff, lots of good food, and family friendly even when the drinks are flowing. We loved it!
Trader Mort's Liquor & Deli
Date: Unknown
So, I did that. Nice decor, and they do sell some Tiki mugs and souvenirs there.
Bali Hai Restaurant
Date: Unknown
One of the all-time great Tiki legends!
Kahuna Tiki
Date: Unknown
Good food, good drinks, nice outdoor atmosphere. Kahuna Tiki Tu, their sister bar/restaurant, is larger and much more elaborate, with multiple indoor seating areas, but Kahuna Tiki is pretty nice as well!
The Warehouse
Date: Unknown
Visited when I attended the Shipwrecked Tiki Social and Bazaar. What a place! Two floors decked with nautical decor and a wide dance floor to boot. Great fun!
The Bamboo Club
Date: Unknown
Visited for Hardcore Tiki Marketplace (which was rather sparse, to tell you the truth — maybe an off-month). The decor is fun, with a number of impressive murals, and I found a new favorite cocktail here when I tried the Fluffy Banana! (You can find the recipe online as Dr. Barca's Fluffy Banana.) The food was good, too, and the bartender and staff friendly. Nice place!
Otto's Shrunken Head
Date: Unknown
A small but friendly Tiki bar, keeping the Ohana dream alive in NYC. Very friendly staff, and surprisingly inexpensive given the neighborhood — I had a Shrunken Skirt cocktail and for an additional $7.00 got to keep the mug!
Frankie's Tiki Room
Date: Unknown
To my knowledge, there are two must-see tiki bars in Vegas, The Golden Tiki and Frankie's Tiki Room. Frankie's is the smaller (and in my opinion, much more authentic) of the two. The decor, though not as loud, is no less impressive, and the menu features a variety of distinctive and wholly original cocktails — I hope someday to try them all, but the Kahiki Kai that I had here was delicious.
The Golden Tiki
Date: Unknown
To my knowledge, there are two must-see tiki bars in Vegas, The Golden Tiki and Frankie's Tiki Room. The Golden Tiki is definitely the larger and more elaborate of the two, with food as well as cocktails on the menu, and decor meant to rival anything you'd see at Disneyland. (Including animatronic parrots that swear like sailors.)
Damon's
Date: Unknown
Visiting Damon's is like stepping back in time to an old Hollywood South Seas Club. Great food, supremely friendly staff, and their Mai Tais are deservedly legendary. This is a restaurant, not a bar, so you're not likely to meet many people or make new Tiki friends here, unless it's at a special event or you strike up a conversation with the folks in the booth across from yours. But it's magical all the same.
The Grass Skirt - San Diego

False Idol
Date: Unknown
My first time here, during mini Comic-Con. This place is a classic, with great drinks and incredible atmosphere — hard to believe it's less than 10 years old! Even with a packed house on a Saturday night, the bartenders are friendly and will chat with you easily, happy to answer your questions and make drink recommendations as they mix. Now I go here every time I'm in San Diego. Terrific!
Tiki-Ti
Date: Unknown
A lovely time in one of the all-time great Tiki bars! Such a friendly crowd. Had the Ray's Mistake (a new favorite) and the Bayanihan (also quite delicious). Next time I have to try the Blood and Sand, if only to see that little mechanical bull run across the bar. Toro! Toro! Toro!
Tonga Hut - North Hollywood
Date: Unknown
Tonight I joined the Loyal Order of the Drooling Bastard! Henceforth and forever, I shall be known as... CAPTAIN NEMO.
Bootlegger Tiki
Date: Unknown
We had a nice time here! I ordered two drinks (pictured here), the Man-Eating Plant and the Dead Man Walking. Our server, Sammi, was the granddaughter of the general manager of original Don the Beachcombers in Hollywood; Bootlegger Tiki is on the site of the second Don the Beachcombers, here in Palm Springs.
