Zombie Glass - Frosted White with Black Graphics & Script - for Monte Proser's Beachcomber
in 1 collection
This is a frosted zombie glass marked for Monte Proser's Beachcomber. It features Monte as a beachcomber under a palm tree with the words "Monte Proser's Beachcomber" on front. The back has the word "ZOMBIE" in all caps with cartoon lightning bolts around it.
This glass was likely used at several of the Monte Proser's Beachcomber locations.
Monte Proser was one of the first to lift Donn Beach's Don the Beachcomber concept, and he lifted the famous Zombie drink right along with it. Proser was largely responsible for introducing the Zombie to the east coast. He started with "Monte Proser's Zombie," a bar created for the New York World's Fair in 1939. Based on that success, he opened Monte Proser's Beachcomber at the end of that same year, December 26th, 1939, in a space above the Winter Garden Theatre in the Theater District north of Times Square (the same space would later hold Lanai, and then Hawaii Kai). Following this, several other locations sprang up, including Miami Beach, Florida, Boston, Massachusetts, Baltimore, Maryland and Providence, Rhode Island.

Medusa - by GeekiTikis
in 2 collections
The Medusa is a monster from Greek mythology, depicted here as a woman with the lower half of a giant snake and the upper half of an ugly woman with snakes for hair. She possesses the power to turn anyone who looks at her face to stone.
Medusa was not always this way. The Roman author Ovid describes the mortal Medusa as a beautiful maiden seduced (some say raped) by Poseidon in a temple of Athena. Such a sacrilege attracted the goddess' wrath, and she punished Medusa by turning her hair to snakes. More charitable depictions of Medusa show her as retaining her mortal beauty except for the snaky hair. However, the 1981 film, Clash of The Titans showed her with a snakey lower half and this and other artist renditions embrace a more monstrous rendition.
In any case, all legends agree that after Perseus cut off her head that the blood fell to earth and spawned the creation of Pegasus -- so some good did come from her death after all.
The Geeki Tikis Medusa Mug is part of their Mythical Creatures line which also includes Cyclops, Cthulhu, and Bigfoot in this second series. This 2024 series was preceded by a 2017 first series including mermaid, dragon, Kraken, and unicorn. A seasonal Krampus mug was also included separately within this category.
From Geeki Tikis:

The Chi Chi opened in 1936 and ceased to be sometime in the 1960s, around 1968 or so. This spotted ashtray features the unauthorized art of Edgar Leeteg's Hina Rapa which was originally painted in oil on velvet, portraying a topless wahine wearing a straw hat. Burgundy graphics on white. Made by Wallace China in 1953. Measures 5.5" in diameter.
Bob Lee's Bamboo Ashtray
in 0 collections
This 5" wide oblong ashtray is marked for "Bob Lee's" in Boston and features a bamboo edging with a lauhala natural woven matting surface.
Because it doesn't say "Lantern House" or "Islander" it is tough to discern whether this is an early or later ashtray for this location which remodeled and went from a Chinese restaurant to a full-Tiki establishment around 1960. Probably a pre-1960 piece, however.
