Trader Tom – 25 May 2001

I was here with a contingent of academics from Antelope Valley College. Bangkok was a side trip in our overall journey which also took a boat down the Yellow River in China, and visited Hong Kong with the giant Tian Tan Buddha at Lantau Island. While in Bangkok we stayed at the Marriot Hotel and I literally walked through the Trader Vic's Restaurant without eating or drinking there because I was eager to do sightseeing and not into Tiki at the time. I ended up doing an elephant ride and almost lost an eye when my elephant lunged forward for a mango on the ground and an overhanging branch came at me like Final Destination!

Set in the heart of a large Bangkok resort, the space is a more modern take on a tiki bar. Not too many decorations, and rather light filled, but still with some nice elements, as well as the classic Chinese ovens. Good tropical garden outside some windows, as well as another entire section overlooking the river. Drinks were standard Trader Vic's fare, and well made by the bar team. Ended up getting a miniature menehune on the way out, which is something I haven't seen before!
