Tiki Bars
Swaylo's Tiki Restaurant & Bar
Longmont, Colorado, United States
Opened March, 2022 in the former site of an Outback Steakhouse.
SWLO is a “district” of Longmont and many pronounce it "SWayLO".
Sean and Rebecca Gafner own three other restaurants in Longmont—the Roost, Jefes Tacos & Tequila, and Smokin’ Bowls—all of which are located on the city’s Main Street.
The center bar of Swaylo's is housed within the gray hull of an old wrecked pirate ship. Seating is spread out around the outside of this centerpiece with plenty of other tiki decor, including pufferfish, glass floats, and stained glass parrots.
Shea's Tiki House Motel
Gulf Breeze, Florida, United States (Closed)
This bar/lounge, package house, coffee house, and motel appears to have thrived during the 70s, but was eventually wiped out after a few Florida hurricanes. Today, the memory lives on through the Pensacola RV Resort.
Shea’s Tiki House Motel became the place to be on Pensacola Beach. The Gulf side had a total of 45 rooms, a pool, and the famous Tiki Lounge. The Tiki Lounge was located underneath the rooms on the Gulf side (see picture) with the Gulf waters just steps away. On the Sound side the Tiki House had 24 units and a pool.
Flamingo's Tiki Bar
Cairns City, Queensland, Australia
Opened December 1st, 2018.
Flamingo's Tiki Bar operates from the basement at the Pacific Hotel (below Bushfire Flame Grill) on the Esplanade in the long-vacant site of a former bottleshop. It is a very small bar with only a 35 person capacity. Billing themselves as a "modern interpretation of tiki", this bar is brightly lit with tropical prints, palm trees, bamboo, hula girls wallpaper, and neon signs. It has more of a Miami feel than a dark and traditional Trader Vics vibe. They do have a serious rum collection (over 150 labels), but a light-hearted approach to serving their cocktails. They serve some drinks in tiki mugs but others are served in glassware with miniature pool blow-up flamingo coasters/huggies.

Jacoby's Tiki Bar
Enmore, New South Wales, Australia
This tiki bar in a suburb of Sydney, Australia opened in August 2017 by partners Pasan Wijesena, James Fury, Adrian Sanchez, and Stu Ellis. Inspired by the tiki-loving character Dr. Jacoby from Twin Peaks, the bar aims to deliver on nostalgia for both Polynesian Pop and the cult favorite television show. The walls are lined with matting and banana-leaf-motif wallpaper, the ceiling with straw matting, and the wooden back bar has several large mounted tikis carved in Queensland. Classic tropical drinks are served, some in tiki mugs.
Howie's Tiki
Spring, Texas, United States (Closed)
Howie's Tiki opened in February 2016, and was located in Spring, Texas (north of Houston, south of Conroe). Owner Mark "Howie" Voros aimed for a classic Polynesian Pop feel, with appropriate music, lamps from Oceanic Arts, and art from Ken Ruzic. The cocktail menu was split between classic tropical drinks like the Test Pilot, Mai Tai, and Navy Grog, and modern tropical cocktails. Ordering off-menu cocktails was encouraged.
Closed November 3rd, 2018.
Tong's Tiki Hut
Villa Park, Illinois, United States
Tong's Tiki Hut in Villa Park is the last remaining location of a small Chicago-area chain of Chinese/Polynesian restaurants. Open since at least 1982. This location still has plenty of old-school tiki charm, with rock walls, tapa cloth lamps, and some nice big tikis. Food is the tiki-traditional "Polynesian" Chinese including a flaming pupu platter, and there is a full bar with drinks served in mugs.
Frankie's Tiki Room
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
Frankie's Tiki Room opened December 4th, 2008.
It is open 24 hours a day, every day. The basis is a traditional Polynesian Pop environment, with beautiful tapa cloth and intricate carvings, with an unusual overlay of crass nods to Las Vegas hedonism.
Interior decor by Bamboo Ben. They also feature both house cocktails and traditional tiki cocktails. Unique signature tiki mugs made by Tiki Farm for purchase.
They do allow smoking inside premises, so non-smokers beware.
Frankie's published a cocktail book, Liquid Vacation, in 2013, if you want to make their cocktails at home.
In December 2022, Ken Ruzic, Big Toe (Tom Laura), and Doug Horne painted a mural around the curved front entrance, helping to celebrate Frankie's 14th Anniversary Celebration.
Brooklyn's Tiki Bar
Brooklyn, New York, United States (Closed)
Opened in 2008 and closed in 2018.
Brooklyn's Tiki Bar was a dive bar with little tropical decor to speak of.
However, they did offer a menu of traditional tropical drinks, and had special tiki cocktail spotlight nights.
Martell's Tiki Bar
Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, United States
Fred Martell opened the bar circa 1962 or shortly before, when there were no raw bars or multiple restaurants at the beach the way there are today. Then, it was known as Martell's Sea Breeze Club.
Dave Bassinder bought the place in the 1980s, and set to work transforming and expanding the operation.
Martell's Tiki Bar is a prime example of the confusion that has arisen between midcentury Polynesian Pop and muddled, any-tropical-will-do, anything-with-thatch-is-tiki "Tiki Bars."
This is the latter -- a bar focused on steel drums, Jimmy Buffett and Corona -- and the WRONG BODY OF WATER. While Caribbean influences have always been present in Polynesian Pop (rum, calypso), this is completely missing the mark. There is little or no tiki to be had here.
It's sad that Martell's owns "tikibar.com". They're completely within their rights, but... ugh.
Hula's Island Grill & Tiki Room - Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, California, United States
This is the second location of Hula's Island Grill & Tiki Room, the first being down the coast in nearby Monterey. This newer location, which opened in late 2006, goes even further with the tiki theme than the original spot. The owners got assistance with the decor from Bosko, 'Onatiki, Tiki Tony, Polynesiac, Oceanic Arts and Munktiki, and consulted with Forbidden Island's Martin Cate in developing the bar. The space is warm, lined with lauhala matting and filled with carvings, floats and tapa lamps.
Then, Hula's Modern Tiki opened in Phoenix (2009-2018) followed by Hula's Modern locations in Scottsdale (2014) and High Street (2020). The first Hula's Modern Tiki in Phoenix re-located on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 to a new location on Seventh Street north of Camelback Road, less than a mile away from the original.
Johnny's Tiki Hut
Salt Lake City, Utah, United States (Closed)
Opened in January 1962.
This restaurant, along with The Hawaiian in Salt Lake City, was owned by Johnny Quong.
