Joe Jung's Indo-China

The Indo-China -- which served everything from Moo Goo Gai Pan to barbecued pork chops -- had a colorful clientele ranging from politicians to beat cops to Chinese American families celebrating special occasions. Until it closed in the early '60s, it was one of the most popular places in town.
The restaurant decor hearkened back to Joe's time working at Zombie Village and Joe also offered tropical drinks as well.
Joe Jung was best known for introducing dual menus -- Western and Cantonese -- in exotic decors outside Chinatown. "The idea," according to his son, David, "was not only to introduce Westerners to Chinese food, but to offer favorite American dishes, like fried chicken and prime rib, to Asian diners in a setting in which they felt comfortable."
Joe started his career by working for the legendary Frank Fat in Sacramento. There he learned the art of Chinese restaurant cooking and became Fat's youngest chef.
In 1940 he began to work for the Zombie Village in Oakland, owned by Skipper Kent who, along with "Trader Vic" Bergeron, whose Hinky Dink's restaurant was in Oakland at the same time, pioneered the marriage of Polynesian motifs with Chinese/Western cuisine.
But it was actually black cooks -- men who worked for the railroads and on their days off cooked at Zombie Village -- who taught Mr. Jung the basics of preparing the dishes for which he was to become famous: fried chicken, biscuits, prime rib and Southern gravy.
In the 1960s, when the O'Farrell Street location was razed to make room for the Nikko Hotel, he moved the restaurant to Chinatown at the corner of Clay and Stockton streets, where it quickly became a favorite of succeeding generations, especially for buffet parties, weddings, baby parties, and birthday celebrations.
Mr. Jung died May 8, 1998. He was 82.
Kahunaville - at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino

This Kahunaville was one location in a nationwide chain of restaurants, but it was the longest lasting.
It doesn't appear to be the case with the other locations, but this location had some actual Bosko tikis in one area, the elevated area on the right immediately as one walks in. They also had a few SHAG (or at least SHAG-like) paintings in one area.
The bar offered a variety of tropical drinks although not much that would be categorized as "craft cocktail" by today's standards. See the giant toilet mug in the last photo below...
Their eclectic food menu featured about 90 items, which included "Kahunaville-sized" sandwiches, salads and entrees with American, Mexican, Cajun and Asian influences.
The parent company of Kahunaville, Adventure Dining Inc., once operated nine nationwide locations, including homes in Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Michigan and Tampa. The Las Vegas, Nevada "Party Bar" (2001-2016) was their last holdout before the chain folded.
This type of corporate chain typifies what many tikiphiles dislike most about corporatizing the Tiki aesthetic -- bending the decor more towards a Chucky Cheese buildout (or perhaps Rainforest Cafe if one is being kind) with cheaply molded and cartoony fiberglass and plastic decorations in primary colors, dumbing down the cocktails of Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic into chemical-tasting slushy boat drinks (but served with "flair"), and offering a big scattershot food menu in hopes of appealing to every American tourist palate. For those that grew up with these, there is some nostalgia, but they were not terribly mourned by fans of traditional tiki bars and restaurants.
This venue was a bit better than the others, it seems, due to its location within the Treasure Island Casino. It also tilted a bit more to adults as evidenced by scantily-clad hostesses dancing on the bar tops, but nothing to blink an eye at when Vegas is concerned. They also hosted hula dancer shows and ran the Treasure Island outside pool bar, serving the same tropical drinks.
The Vegas location produced a great many ceramic tiki mugs, most of them from Poolside Pineapple, which was located in Las Vegas also.
Surf Rider Lounge - at the Jefferson Davis Hotel

The Jefferson Davis Hotel is a former hotel located in Montgomery, Alabama. It was named for Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America. Built in 1927. It was one in a chain of Carling Dinkler family owned hotels named after Confederate war leaders. Dinkler also opened the Luau in Nashville which he sold to the Dobb's.
The Surf Rider Lounge was opened on September 15th, 1960. The Alabama Journal has the following to say about the opening night entertainment:
"The entertainment picture of Montgomery became in focus last night with the opening of the Surf Rider Room in the Jefferson Davis Hotel and the arrival of Dorita. Both are wonderful! The style of Dorita is refreshing, to say the least. A fine musician, a fine singer and, above all, a top notch entertainer, she is exactly what the newly redone lounge needs to set it off as Montgomery's lounge of distinction. Dorita is an entertainer of note. Facile with both English and Spanish, she has just enough of the Latin temperament and feeling for her music to be able to sing with sincerity and that deep feeling which make the difference between true artistry and mere technical skill. Her interpretations of some of the old favorite Spanish numbers are without peer. Singing 'Granada' she manages to take her audience off on a musical venture which is fascinating and colorful. The decoration of the Surf Rider Room is, for Montgomery, out of this world. Using a Polynesian motif, the decorator managed to achieve the atmosphere without being gaudy or ostentatious. The overall harmony of style meets the eye gently, as, indeed, it should in a place of that type. One coming into the room is aware of theme without being aware of any one aspect which goes to make up the theme. The Surf Rider Room Is easily the mast delightful lounge in our state."
The lone remaining image of the Surf Rider, on postcards, shows it was painted in light blue with fish netting hanging from the ceiling and shells and other flotsam and jetsam caught up in the netting.
It is unclear when the Surf Rider Lounge at the Jefferson Davis Hotel closed, but it probably did not last very long.
There was also a second Surf Rider Lounge at the Andrew Jackson Hotel in Nashville which was later bulldozed in 1971 to make room for the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and the James K. Polk State Office Building.
The Jefferson Davis Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 13, 1979.
This location looks much the same on the exterior but is currently used as apartments for the elderly -- The Jefferson Davis Apartments.
The Tiki Hut Restaurant & Lounge

Mary Yick opened The Tiki Hut in 1961, on Tyler Street in Boston's Chinatown.
An article in February 1970, noted how “The Tiki Hut is a favorite after-show stop for many theatrical people when they’re in town.” The article mentioned how Pearl Baily, her husband, drummer Louis Bellson, co-star Cab Calloway, and other cast members of “Hello Dolly” dined at The Tiki Hut. Many theatrical celebrities dined at the restaurant when they were in town, and some of those regulars included David Merrick, Angela Lansbury, and Shakespearean actor Nicol Williamson.
Like Ruby Foo's Den and the Cathay House, the Tiki Hut was a favorite of the stage and screen celebrities, as well as stars from the local sport teams, from the Celtics to the Bruins. It was even noted in an article in February 1971, that on the theatrical circuit, Mary Yick was affectionately known as “The Dragon Lady.”
Unfortunately, Mary and the Tiki Hut ran into a serious problem in mid-1971, facing a possible ouster from her 10 Tyler Street location. The owner of the premises, the Lee On Dong Association, was attempting to conduct an “auction in the Chinese tradition of her lease.” Fortunately, Mary was able to secure an injunction to halt the auction until the owners could come forward and justify themselves to the court.
Mary and the Tiki Hut lasted only another year, though at least it seemed the lease ouster had been prevented, when in November 1972, she transferred the liquor license to Mai Lai Inc., managed by Kwok Man Yu, who would operate a restaurant at the same address. The Boston Globe, December 1, 1972, noted this loss in an article titled, “Chinatown loses its last Dragon Lady.” It referred to Mary Yick “of the lyrical voice and quick quips that (gently but plainly) put down amorous customers.” The article also stated, “Her departure ends, at least for the time, a tradition begun by the legendary Ruby Foo and later Anita Chue.”
Kuo Wah Restaurant

Chin Mon Wah (Young family patriarch) and his childhood friend, Chin Kwok Yen, purchased the building in the late 30s. Prior to placing a restaurant in this location it had at the ground floor a photo studio at 942 and stores at 946-950 Grant Avenue with the remaining two floors above being the Gum Mon Hotel.
At this time they remodeled the building to house the Kuo Wah Cafe at 942 Grant Ave which served American Style food and 946-950 to serve Chinese food. The Lions Den Nightclub was in the basement and its entrance was at 942. This is where the bar was located at that time. The Lions Den had shows featuring Chinese performers that would sing, dance and tell jokes just like all the mainstream nightclubs of the era. The Gum Mon Hotel still remained. Sometime after WW II, in the mid to late 1950s, the Lions Den Nightclub ceased to exist due to the changing times and became a dining room. Its bar was relocated from the basement to the main floor location of the Cafe which served American food. Many politicians, heads of state and other dignitaries were hosted.
In the early 60s, Chin Mon Wah's son, Andy Young, had by that time became general manager, and again undertook major construction. The Lions Den basement, main floor Kuo Wah Cafe and second floor hotel rooms were remodeled into a single restaurant called the Kuo Wah Restaurant instead of "cafe". A new bar was built in the basement, the kitchen was relocated from the main floor to the basement. A second remodel of the existing bar took place and the 2nd floor hotel rooms were cleared to make way for a 300+ person dining room. An outdoor courtyard was created at the front entrance of the building so that diners could sit out on nice days to eat or have cocktails.
Upstairs, they had a burlesque dance review based on a number out of the hit play (1958) and film (1961), Flower Drum Song. In the film, “Fan Tan Fannie” was performed by the strip-teasing female comic lead, Linda Low, played in the film by sex symbol Nancy Kwan. Their postcards advertised the dancing girls doing 3 shows a night along with "togetherness dancing" whatever that meant...
Between 65' and 68' there was a nightclub in the basement called The Drag'on A' Go-Go, which featured local bands. This is when they started to offer free tiki mugs with any of their exotic Polynesian cocktails. These mugs were exclusively from Otagiri Manufacturing Co. This continued until 1975 at which time they sold the restaurant to investors who rebuilt once again to make a Hong Kong style dim sum eatery. At this time the restaurant was still called Kuo Wah.
Since then the restaurant changed hands at least two more times. Its name for 20 years or so was Grand Palace.
Then, in 2021, owners with a love of history decided to bring back a version of The Lion's Den Club as the new Lion's Den Lounge and Bar. The address for this newer club is 57 Wentworth Pl, San Francisco, CA 94108, but it occupies the same footprint as the old club and honors its style and memory.
Hula's Modern Tiki - Uptown - Phoenix

"In 2018, after 10 amazing years on Central Avenue, HULA’S surfed into an all-new location in uptown Phoenix. Led by partner Chris Delaney (who is the design soul of HULA’S) we stripped the old, dark space back to its mid-century modern bones, added a soaring central bar, the top embedded with tumbled sea glass, and built out a spacious indoor-outdoor dining patio replete with HULA’S signature fire pit. Plus, we added HULA’S first-ever private dining space (The Tiki Room) and a nautical-themed craft cocktail bar/lounge called The Captain’s Cabin."
Hula's modern re-located here in 2018 from their original location on Central Avenue (2009-2018) and then opened a location on High Street as well, making a grand total of three Hula's locations in Arizona if you include the Scottsdale location as well.
The main area is pretty sparse, going with the modern aesthetic/theme but there are a couple of tikis outside flanking the door and there are some tiki plaques at the back of the room close to the restrooms. Inside there is colored mood lighting but also bar televisions set to sports channels.
For tikiphiles, you may want to call ahead if you have a large group and reserve the more lavish Tiki Room area in back which is preceded by a large tiki and mug shelf display -- and upon entering reveals a more traditionally tiki atmosphere with lauhala matting on the walls, a large swag lamp in the center, more tiki plaques, and padded benches covered in tropical barkcloth print fabric. This room is served just as another portion of the main Hula's restaurant with the same food and cocktail menu.
However, outside and from an unmarked door separate from the rest of Hula's is a speakeasy style bar called The Captain's Cabin, which has its own cocktail menu and is housed inside a room meant to resemble its namesake with rough planking and nautical furnishings. It does not have its own bathroom so you may have to go next door to Hulas. See separate listing for this Captain's Cabin bar...
Royal Hawaiian - From 2006 to 2022

The Royal Hawaiian opened in 1947. It was owned by the Cabang family. The Cabangs were originally from the Phillipines and were friends with both of the Fillipino Tiki carvers in L.A. at the time, Milan Guanko and Andres Bumatay. These talented artists both supplied Tikis for the restaurant. The prominent Andres Bumatay tikis outside the restaurant became weathered and destroyed and were later replaced by modern carvings.
The Royal Hawaiian also had a sister location located in Anaheim in the 1950s.
The Royal Hawaiian has been through several iterations. It originally had several small dining rooms with glass-walled dioramas filled with tikis and plants, great lamps, bamboo, thatch and sea grass matting, and a bar with a fireplace and pufferfish. There were lovely oil paintings throughout, including a large piece hung directly above the hostess stand.
In spring 2006, the restaurant was sold to a new owner, who gutted it. The newer, tiki-stripped version closed for good in 2012. In 2016, the space reopened, again with the name Royal Hawaiian, this time by people who wanted to bring back its rich tiki history. The new owners, Mo Honarkar and daughters Hasty and Nikisa, worked to bring back a fully-decorated Royal Hawaiian with the help of Bamboo Ben.
However in January-February 2019, the restaurant was closed for yet another remodel and then re-opened on April 3rd, 2019 under the auspices of chef Mariano Maro Molteni. Honarkars company remained as landlords, while Molteni owned and operated the restaurant which he rebranded as the "Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill". Molteni's remodel (which came as a surprise to the landlords) removed much of Bamboo Ben's decor, especially natural materials like lauhala matting and thatching in favor of dark blue painted walls and a "cleaner" and "less cluttered" look. There were still tikis and accent pieces, but the interior was much reduced from its former full tiki glory.
On July 15th, 2022, Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill announced its closure for the end of that same month, on July 31st, 2022.
Following the 2022 closure of the last iteration of the Royal Hawaiian, the space was turned over to Boulevard Hospitality for a complete transformation and a grand re-opening in May 2023. The new build-out was completed by Ignacio “Notch” Gonzales, famous for building spaces like Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco and Inside Passage in Seattle.
To round out the new experience, the Royal Hawaiian’s owners have brought on famed barman Dushan Zaric of Employees Only to build a bespoke cocktail menu that riffs, weaves, and rethinks the rum-forward staples of tiki lore.

Pagan Idol

Pagan Idol opened in San Francisco's Financial District on February 24th, 2016. The bar is owned by the Future Bars group, which owns a variety of craft cocktail bars around the San Francisco Bay Area.
Pagan Idol has a front bar, which is designed to look like the inside of a wooden ship, complete with porthole views of swimming fish, and blown glass tentacle light fixtures.
Red-lit stairs lead to the back bar, which is where the full-on Polynesian Pop experience can be found. A second bar is lined with zebrawood and backed by lava windows. Overlooking the bar is a massive tiki carved by Crazy Al Evans, and a large outrigger canoe hangs overhead. A tangle of ropes and fishing floats decorates the bar. The walls are lined with Tongan tapa cloth designs.
Just beyond, the room opens up, and a night sky of twinkling stars hangs overhead, with a volcano waterfall and two cozy booths. Looming over this room is a second large tiki, this one carved by Ivan Lee Mora. Periodically, the volcano "erupts" and a fog creeps along the starry sky, adding to the moodiness of the room.
The soundtrack is all Exotica and hapa-haole music. The drink menu is all original tropical drinks, but a full array of classic tiki drinks can be ordered off-menu.
In the 1950s, this same location held Tiki Bob's Mainland Rendezvous.
Kahlua Hut
Hyattsville, Maryland, United States (Closed)
Owned by local restaurant moguls “Jake” and “Mama Jo” Tavenner, the Kahlua Hut was operated by Bernie Atkins and Bob McGeehan from spring 1967 until 1973.
Located in a former ice cream shop at Riggs Road and East-West Highway (built in 1955), its décor was “that of a South Pacific hut—thatched roofs, hurricane lights, can-like fixtures and, at least once a week, a hula band.” It seated up to 140 patrons, leaving floor space for seven-nights-a-week dancing. The Kahlua Hut’s pan-Asian and “continental” cuisine was initially prepared by Chef Yee M. Kiang. The restaurant staff fielded a team of duckpin bowlers competitive locally and nationally.
Featured on its drinks menu was the “Kahlua Tiki Tumbler,” offered in such a mug: “an exotic mixture of the finest rums and passion fruits, gin and vermouth.” For $2.15 total, the mug was yours to take.
After 1973, this location became The Outrigger, presumably with the same Pop Polynesian theme intact.
Today, as of 2023, this original 1955 building is still intact and house three businesses (Dry Cleaners, Bakery, and Pizza Bolis).
The China Trader
Burbank, California, United States (Closed)
Opened in 1950 by Willie Shenker, along with Jack & Florence Jung.
The dining area held 85 seats. Apart from this was the "Copra Room" bar.
This Chinese restaurant had a semi-tiki nautical theme, and though they had a 28-cocktail-long menu, they are best known for being the birthplace of the Hawaiian Eye drink. The '60s detective show Hawaiian Eye was filmed on a nearby Burbank lot, and the China Trader was their afterwork hangout. The Hawaiian Eye drink was concocted there in their honor.
This is seemingly at odds with a recipe attributed to Harry Yee for the Hawaiian Eye which is as follows:
THE HAWAIIAN EYE
¼ oz Light Rum ¾ oz Jamaican Dark Rum ¾ oz Dark Rum 3 oz Grapefruit Juice 1 ½ oz Guava Juice 1 dash Bitters 1 dash Simple Syrup
Shake the contents in a shaker along with ice. Strain into an ice filled hurricane glass. Garnish with an orchid and pineapple wedge.
*NOTE: A separate recipe attributed to Tony Ramos for the Hawaiian Eye has lime juice, simple syrup, falernum, and gold and white rum. Perhaps this version is what was invented at China Trader. China Trader is also known for Tony Ramos working there as a long-time bartender.
Vic Bernardo became the new owner in June of 1969. He did extensive remodeling and enlarging of the venue which was completed by September of 1973.
The bar was directly across the street from Bob's Big Boy (built in 1949), and while the iconic Bob's is still there at that same location, the China Trader is not.
This space is now occupied by Toluca Lake Cleaners (as of 2024).
Trader Vic's - Oakland

This Trader Vic's location is the original. It started out as Hinky Dink's, opened by Victor Bergeron a few years earlier in 1934 and had its name changed in 1937. Hinky Dink's had some great atmosphere and cocktails, but wasn't Polynesian until Bergeron was inspired by a visit to Hollywood, where he experienced Seven Seas and Don the Beachcomber.
In 1949, Bergeron opened a second location, initially called The Outrigger but later becoming Trader Vic's, in Seattle. In 1951 a location opened in San Francisco that was considered a powerhouse in the restaurant scene for decades. From there, it exploded into a number of restaurants that still pepper the globe today.
Bergeron is credited with being among the first to incorporate actual tikis into a tropical bar/restaurant concept. Bamboo bars and tropical restaurants had been around for a long time, and folks like Eli Hedley and Don the Beachcomber had created a more gritty, flotsam & jetsam inspired "beachcomber" look, but Bergeron took that a step further into look that was both refined and primal at the same time. But most of all, he brought in the tikis. He also brought a focus to the food, innovative for its time, blending the exotic tastes of many ethnic cuisines and presenting them for the still-developing American palates.
In the mid-1990s, many Trader Vic's locations in the United States closed, including the San Francisco and Seattle locations. International locations, including many in the Middle East, continued opening. In more recent years, the number of Trader Vic's locations in the United States have been growing again, with mixed results.
The original Trader Vic's location closed in 1972, when the company shifted its flagship location to Emeryville.
Luau 400
Manhattan, New York, New York, United States (Closed)
Opened on Thursday, November 7th, 1957. The restaurant was simply called "Restaurant 400" before it became the "Luau 400".
An example from their advertising:
"Every night is carnival night at the Luau 400. An exotic, lavishly conceived Hawaiian 'movie set' of a restaurant. The Luau 400 has brought the informality, infectious gaiety and colorful cuisine of the Islands right to your doorstep. As you step through the front door a lovely Hawaiian girl in her native sarong places a gaily colored lei around your neck...you walk through the Pu Pu Bar with its many native masks, and see walls graced with the paintings from Hawaii. Seen throughout the Tangaroa Room and Polynesian Room are masks worn by the ancient Chiefs of the islands. To reach the different dining rooms you walk over the Leilani Bridge with its colorful waterfall and tropical gardens decorated in all the islands' splendor, then by the wishing well and past the tiny Maneki Neko, the guardian of this enchanting scene."
They boasted three kitchens: Polynesian, Cantonese, and American. Other draws included their lavish painted wall murals, bird cages with live birds, dining tables with real monkeypod wood tabletops, and a constantly looped color film of island festivals and dancing playing in the dining room to set the mood.
Apparently, "Luau 400" became "Ta Luau" @1967 for a brief time. Ta Luau produced a full set of Jackson China dinnerware with the same tiki mask logo as Luau 400.
This location has been home to several businesses over the intervening years. It was home to Jimmy's Downtown restaurant from @2002-2004. As of 2024, this space is home to Stonehenge 57 Apartments.
