Tiki Bars
Restaurant en Coulisse
Chessy, France
Opened March 16th, 2002.
Restaurant en Coulisse is a massive fast food restaurant within the Walt Disney Studios Park at the Disneyland Paris Resort. The restaurant is themed with facades of Hollywood restaurants both made-up and real, including the fictional "Liki Tiki" -- complete with A-frame and decor from Oceanic Arts.
Lots of burgers on the menu. No cocktails. Just beer and a wide assortment of sodas and other beverages.
Aloha Bar - Moscow
Moskva, Russia (Closed)
Aloha Bar began as a project connected with Tiki Bar in Moscow, but the two appear to have separated well before Aloha Bar closed. Aloha Bar had a focus on craft cocktails. The rum list and cocktail menu were extensive. The interior was framed with bamboo, and included "Moscow's largest indoor waterfall," though the overall feel tended toward the sleek, modern end. Aloha Bar's Facebook page has ceased to advertise itself for some years but there are still recent posts, almost exclusively about Black Hat Shack Bar, a newer Moscow tiki bar which seems likely to have been created by some of the former principal owners of Aloha Bar.
Tacoma Cabana
Tacoma, Washington, United States (Closed)
Tacoma Cabana was opened by owner and bartender Jason Alexander and Robyn Murphy in Tacoma's downtown in 2012. The establishment was a mix of traditional midcentury Polynesian Pop, with some more modern-day Hawaiian influences. The bar had a large selection of rums, and a particular focus on the quality of the cocktails.
Alexander and Murphy opened a new tiki bar nearby, Devil's Reef, in January 2018, where they lean harder into full-on tiki. Over the next months they worked to shift their efforts entirely to the new business, and closed Tacoma Cabana on September 1, 2018.
The LuWow - Fitzroy
Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia (Closed)
"Skipper" Josh Collins opened the LuWow in 2011 in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne. The LuWow was divided into two sections: the Island Village, which was a traditional Tiki bar, and the Forbidden Temple, a music hall. On weekends, the music hall portion hosted bands, '60s-era DJs, and the occasional Polynesian revue.
The LuWow closed in late December 2016, when their lease on the space ran out.
However, it re-opened in a new location in 2019 at 212 Little Collins Street, Melbourne.
Porco Lounge & Tiki Room
Cleveland, Ohio, United States
Porco Lounge & Tiki Room opened in Cleveland's historic Tremont neighborhood in October 2013. Owner Stefan Was let his passion for tiki lead him into the hospitality business. Porco Lounge is the first tiki bar in Cleveland since the Kon-Tiki closed in 1976. Was used elements from the Kon-Tiki in the decor for Porco, including some lamps and bamboo from the restaurant. Also used for decor are Was' collections of swizzle sticks and tiki mugs. Was hired Shannon Smith to lead the bar program, bringing his background in craft cocktails with him, resulting in a menu of finely crafted tiki drinks.
Lucky Joe's Tiki Room
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States (Closed)
Lucky Joe's Tiki Room opened in the Walker's Point neighborhood of Milwaukee in November 2012. Lucky Joe's drink menu was a mix of tiki classics and their own unique inventions, with a focus on quality ingredients. Walls were lined with lauhala and bamboo, and a large Moai greeted you near the entrance. Lucky Joe's Tiki Room closed at the end of October 2015, when the building it occupied was sold to property developers.
The Shameful Tiki Room - Vancouver
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
The Shameful Tiki Room opened in Vancouver's Riley Park neighborhood in March 2013. Owner Rod Moore has dedicated himself to creating a classic Polynesian Pop escape, with a dimly-lit, windowless environment decked with bamboo and float lamps. The space is small, but there is a kitchen, and theme-appropriate live music acts are sometimes showcased.
In November 2015, a sister location was opened: The Shameful Tiki Room in Toronto, Ontario.
Grass Skirt Tiki Room - Columbus
Columbus, Ohio, United States (Closed)
Grass Skirt Tiki Room opened in downtown Columbus in November 2012. The drink and food menus included both Polynesian yesteryear classics and more modern takes on tropical. Souvenir mugs were available. The decor included echoes of Columbus' beloved Kahiki Supper Club, with contributions from local tikiphile collectors and craftspeople. There were beachcomber lamps, pufferfish, large tikis, and a lava wall, and even some bamboo pieces that originated at the Kahiki. The bar closed in September 2019.
VenTiki
Ventura, California, United States
VenTiki opened in July 2013. Great care and attention were paid to the history of Polynesian Pop, particularly with the tropical drinks.
It is full of modern-style bamboo touches and chunky resin lamps. There is also an outdoor patio area in front.
It has a dedicated shrine to Magnum P.I.
The logo design was created by local artist Tiki tOny.
In 2016, a storm blew a tree over onto the patio; its fall was stopped by a carved tiki, saving some patrons who would have been struck.
There was an adjacent Ventiki shop for several years, but around 2021, this space was converted to another interior dining area which was badly needed.
As of 2022, Ventiki built additional outdoor seating curbside and during peak evenings, a line can form between these curbside areas and the hostess stand, but it usually moves fairly quickly.
Tonga Hut - Palm Springs
Palm Springs, California, United States
Tonga Hut opened in Palm Springs in the spring of 2013. It is the sister location of the historic Tonga Hut in North Hollywood, with the same ownership responsible for restoring that location to tiki glory.
Tonga Hut is located on the second floor of its building. The restaurant has booth seating, and a dramatic tiki bas relief wall. Tucked at the back is a phone booth with a false back, leading into a small private room with a rich, dense, golden-era approach to tiki style. Behind that room is a small private lanai with a Witco bar and stools. Opposite the restaurant side of the space, there is a good-sized bar with a tiki-tinged mid-century modern look, and a lanai overlooking Palm Springs' main drag. The interior was created by Tiki Diablo.
The Palm Springs Tonga Hut location has a full food menu, including a flaming pu-pu platter. The drink menu is a mix of classic tiki drinks and their own modern creations, and includes a flaming coconut drink and shared volcano bowls. Tonga Hut hosts special music events, with particular emphasis on Exotica acts.
Tiki Iniki - Princeville
Princeville, Hawaii, United States
Tiki Iniki opened in Princeville, on the north side of the island of Kauai, in 2013. It was brought to life by Michele Rundgren, wife of famed all-over-the-musical-map Todd Rundgren. The two fell in love with Kauai through their visits to the Coco Palms resort. They moved to Kauai just after Hurricane Iniki destroyed the resort. All these years later, they have now opened a place of their own.
The interior of Tiki Iniki was created by Bamboo Ben.
A sister Tiki Iniki location came and went in Atlanta, operated by a licensee without the Rundgrens' involvement.
Hong Kong Inn
Ventura, California, United States (Closed)
Hong Kong Inn opened in 1964. It closed on November 30, 2012 but then re-opened again in April, 2014. Then it closed its doors once again in September 2020 and was converted to a Mexican Restaurant. The decor and cuisine was decidedly Chinese, but tropical drinks were served (including volcano bowls), and most notably, there was a Polynesian revue on Friday and Saturday nights at 9pm.
