Crowne Plaza Hanalei Hotel

The Crowne Plaza, originally the Hanalei Hotel (built in 1959), was remodeled and expanded just a few years later to include features like flaming Moai and Tikis atop its towers. This 1964-1966 expansion was by Hendrick & Mock, architects.
This hotel was also host to Islands Restaurant and Islands Sushi and Pupu Bar.
The hotel became part of the the Crowne Plaza chain, and was later formally called the Crowne Plaza San Diego. Before becoming a Crowne Plaza hotel, it was a Red Lion hotel, and before that it was a Best Western. The sign for the Hanalei used to be a fantastic example of Googie signage, but tragically, it was replaced with an exceedingly bland sign when "updated" by Best Western. The "Hanalei" name was dropped entirely from use when it became the Crowne Plaza in 2007.
For many years, the Crowne Plaza was able to retain a little bit of its Polynesian feel, including tikis salvaged from Steve Crane's Luau in Beverly Hills. It is a large hotel, and the remaining tiki touches were more scattered than immersive.
In late 2006, the Islands Restaurant was gutted for "renovation", and the amount of tiki to be found here dwindled to near nothingness by 2024.
*This site was a host of the ever-growing Tiki Oasis event (2006-2019) before it moved and was held at San Diego's Paradise Point (2020) and later re-located to San Diego's Town and Country in 2021. From 2001 to 2005 Tiki Oasis was held at the Caliente Tropics in Palm Springs.
In the beginning of the Covid pandemic the hotel was contracted by the city to house homeless Covid victims (and then later, apparently immigrants) and this restaurant was closed since @2020 to the public. Fences and security were put up and those not registered to stay were turned away. Then, another remodeling was completed and the hotel opened back up in 2024 to show that nearly all traces of Tiki decor had been removed from the premises, save some lava rock on some of the walls and some tiki railings.
So, although you can visit the hotel now, as of 2024, it is essentially finished as a tiki point of interest, save for the memories.
*NOTE: House of Buzz (Buzzy Meeker) was able to salvage much of the removed decor and tikis. He sold them through direct sales and through an auction, complete with auction catalog. The catalog could be purchased through his Etsy store. One particularly large and noteworthy tiki (seen below with model) and attributed to Mexican artist Deme Chavez (carved from South American hardwood in the 1950s) stood proudly in the Hanalei garden atrium for decades but now has a new home at False Idol in San Diego.
The Polynesian - Torrance

Opened on August 25th, 1957 and closed due to fire in 1959, but was refurbished and re-opened in 1960 to run for 4 more years before being sold in 1964.
It was festooned with tiki idols, torches and artifacts, lots of palms and other exotic flora to frame diners enjoying authentic Polynesian cuisine. They even had a miniature volcano and waterfall built in the tropical garden, which also featured an ornate bridge.
The unusual Polynesian Kava and Tiki bowls in their old menu have fueled many expeditions for these "crypto mugs", and it is thought they must have been available for only a brief time as they are not shown in the later menu version.
In 1964 the Polynesian briefly became Jamaica West (a youth-oriented dancing and nightclub spot) for a year or so, and was then purchased by Hop Louie who re-opened it as Latitude 20 in 1966. Latitude 20 ran through 1980 before being sold to developers who decided to stray from the Polynesian theme and go Country. It was a Waco's and then a Calamity's before the structure was finally leveled in 1984.
The site is now a strip mall.
Pacific Island Traders

Open circa 2003-2006.
This place featured new retail items -- such as new bamboo furniture, including bedroom and living room sets. Lots of gift items like soaps, candles, and wind chimes. They had tikis but they were imported. They may have had a few Tiki Farm mugs.
Most recently, this site was home to UP Sports (sporting goods, surf & paddle shop). As of 2022, the building appears to be vacant.
Tiki Farm

Tiki Farm is the largest modern mug manufacturer, creating mugs for sale at stores and restaurants, or through the Tiki Farm website. Tiki Farm has created many limited edition mugs in partnership with modern tiki artists such as Shag, Joe Vitale and Crazy Al. Tiki Farm has produced affordable reproductions of some of the popular vintage mug designs, such as the Suffering Bastard, and Mr. Bali Hai. Tiki Farm also creates glassware, serveware, and other general tikiware.
Holden Westland is the owner and founded the company in 2000.
Their old location at 1305 Calle Avanzado also held a Mugoomba bar (built 2006) and played host to several Big Tiki Bashes.
They moved their facilities in 2011 or so and began a slow remodel hampered somewhat by their success which gave little time to think of much beyond production. Their complete remodel and re-outfitting of the new office at 1120 Calle Cordillera was completed in 2021.
Tiki Farm then moved to 981 Calle Negocio, Suite 100, San Clemente, California 92673 around May of 2024.
Kelbo's - La Brea - Los Angeles

This location on Fairfax was the second of two, built in 1950, the first being built at Pico in 1947. Two men, Thomas Kelley and Jack Bouck, combined the first syllables of their last names and invented Kelbo’s, a small chain of Hawaiian barbecues whose food was not all that Hawaiian: burgers, barbecue meat sandwiches and some miscellaneous seafood. The concession to the islands was that every plate was garnished with a piece of pineapple and the fried shrimp was coated with coconut. They also served very sweet (but very good) barbecued ribs and had a menu of tropical drinks, some of which came flaming or served in a skull mug. Eli Hedley was the main designer and he was also responsible for the interior of other tropical-themed restaurants like Don the Beachcomber. Kelbo’s felt like a place that had been decorated in the thirties or forties and then no one changed anything. As mentioned, there were two Kelbo’s. This one was on Fairfax across from CBS Television City in La Brea, and was later torn down. It was a popular hangout for crew members who worked across the street at CBS Television City in the fifties and sixties. The building that housed the other was over on Pico at Exposition. After that location was shuttered, the building was converted into a bikini bar called Fantasy Island for a time. Much of the Kelbo’s advertising art was done by Bob Hale who otherwise turned up on Los Angeles TV from time to time as a cartooning weatherman. (He was also active in Seattle where he owned a popular hobby shop that bore his name.) Hale’s drawings of a fat Hawaiian guy in native garb could be seen on Kelbo’s napkins and menus, and both of the Kelbo's outlets had huge Bob Hale murals on the outside.
Oceanic Arts

Oceanic Arts was a major contributor to tiki culture since its opening on June 25th, 1956, when it was opened by LeRoy Schmaltz and Bob Van Oosting.
Bob and LeRoy have provided carvings, decorations, signage, light fixtures, and all the outfitting needed for a tiki location to nearly all of the major spots, including Disney. Oceanic Arts served as a Home Depot of sorts for the tikiphile.
The store was closed for good on November 24th, 2021.
Bob and LeRoy went out on a triumphant note by announcing the publication of a book chronicling their much beloved business on the same day. This book, authored by Jordan Reichek and published by Peekaboo Gallery, was issued in a regular or slipcover edition. This was accompanied by 2 rounds of auctions and accompanying auction books. Together, these books give a very thorough overview of the work produced by Oceanic Arts.
Trader Vic's - Washington D.C.

This Trader Vic's was inside the Statler Hilton (now the Capital Hilton). It operated from 1961 until 1995.
Among its many decorations were two large moai carvings with top-knots outside the front entrance that were created by Barney West.
This Trader Vic's was a major center for politicians for many years; president Richard Nixon reportedly loved to drink Navy Grogs here.
Kona Kai Apartments - Torrance

Built in 1961. The Kona Kai apartments are located just half a block from the Eli Kai Apartments.
There is a stone carved tiki out by the pool.
Bali Hai-Outrigger Apartments
Stockton, California, United States
Bali Hai, the first apartment complex by A. G. Spanos Construction, was built in 1961 in Stockton, California. In 1962, the company built its second project, the Outrigger, right next to Bali Hai.
In 1965, Alex Spanos built the company’s headquarters in Stockton, California, and maintained the offices for the next 40 years.
The Islander - Stockton

The Islander (1966-1980) was a staple of Stockton's late-night entertainment in the 70s and 80s. Tommy Lee bought The Islander from restaurateur Hop Louie, who had hired architect Warren Wong to design the building to resemble a shipwreck on a sandy beach.
Most of the Islander's mugs were manufactured by Otagiri (OMC) and included: the "Islander child's tiki" mug, more commonly called a peanut mug today, which was available in black and the more common brown; three-face bucket mugs in both a short and tall size, which Mai Tais were served in; a rare green Maori-face bucket mug; a strangely large Scorpion bowl for two with an outrigger scene on one side and palm trees on the reverse; a "surf rider" mug that was also used at the unrelated Latitude 20; a tall wahine mug in the shape of a palm tree trunk (also the same shape as a Tiki Bob mug); a tiki mug with the image of an Andres Bumatay tiki on it (this same tiki was also used for early Islander menu cover artwork); a three-tiki bowl by an unknown manufacturer, and marked as being from the Islander only with a clear sticker on the bottom; a "Hurricane" mug (more commonly called a Kon Tiki mug today, as the face was borrowed from Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki); a later Hurricane mug that looked like a section of bamboo; a Wan Fu mug that is commonly called Mr. Sleepy by collectors; an unusual bug-eyed moai mug sometimes seen with white eyes; skull mugs for serving the Kona Grog, which came in black or white; a coconut mug which can be found in varying shades of brown, for serving the Coconut Punch; a pineapple mug with holes for two straws, which came with the Pi-Yi; a Suffering Tiki mug with two straw holes and a toothy grin that will be familiar to Kelbo's fans; and a Bora Bora head mug, also with two straw holes.
In the mid-90s, the building was moved to 10464 North Highway 99, and operated as the Pollardville Chicken Kitchen. The building is now demolished. The left-behind original lot is now a Tower Records.
Tommy Lee passed away at age 87 in 2002.
The Stockton Islander is not to be confused with the earlier Los Angeles Islander.

Tonga Room - at the Fairmont Hotel

The Tonga Room is a great example of an old, classic Polynesian restaurant. It can be found in the basement floor of the upscale Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. The Tonga Room has gone through several incarnations over the years, themed initially upon opening on September 18th, 1945 as a cruise ship (the S.S. Tonga), then in the '50s as a Mondrian-esque Chinese restaurant, then finally in the '60s the current theme of a Polynesian paradise took hold. Before becoming a restaurant, the space was the hotel's swimming pool.
The bar area of the restaurant has some impressive nautical theming, complete with a large ship's mast and sail, and plenty of rigging. There are two long dining rooms. The left dining room lies beneath a peaked-roof A-frame structure of impressive scale, with gorgeous carved details. The right dining room includes tables clustered under smaller round thatched huts, each one filled with large, colorful float lamps. Around the entire restaurant there are no shortage of old carved pieces tucked in between tropical foliage.
The dining rooms and the bar wrap around the real star attraction: a water-filled lagoon (the remains of the room's swimming pool origins), with a small tapa-lined boat with a thatched roof, where a band plays. Every thirty minutes a thunderstorm erupts, and rain falls into the pool. Unfortunately, this grand spectacle is also where the Tonga Room experience goes sadly sideways: while earlier in the evening the soundtrack is appropriate Hawaiian music, the house band plays dance hits of the '80s. The band starts playing at 8pm, at which time a cover charge is added to all bills (adding insult to the injury). The more low-key Happy Hour buffet at the Tonga Room, which goes from 5-7pm Monday-Friday, is quite popular.
In early 2009, the Fairmont announced plans to add a new tower of condominiums; this plan would have displaced the historic Tonga Room. This led to a fight against the removal of this unique piece of San Francisco history. The end result was positive: the Tonga Room is now protected under special landmark status by the City of San Francisco. The owners could still choose to close the Tonga Room, but every artifact within must be painstakingly cataloged, tracked, and preserved, and hopefully that daunting task will stave off any dreams of converting the space. The hotel has since changed ownership, and the new owners have no interest in the old condo plan.
In 2013, the menu was revamped; the tropical drinks being served are now much truer to the traditional recipes, and prepared with more care. Tonga Room's management has said that this new menu has led to a dramatic increase in bar sales, giving hope that this new trend towards a higher quality experience at the Tonga Room will continue.
Tiki Bob's

Tiki Bob's opened in 1955, when Bob Bryant left the San Francisco Trader Vic's where he'd worked as a bar manager to open his own restaurant. The very stylized tiki logo for Tiki Bob's was created by Alec Yuill-Thornton, and its appeal endures today.
Closed in 1983.
While Tiki Bob's space has been through many, many reincarnations, the Tiki Bob's logo tiki still stands guard at the corner of Post & Taylor, giving a friendly smile to all who pass. The space is currently occupied by Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery.
Strangely, the Tiki Bob logo tiki is not the most famous totemic icon on this corner -- that honor belongs to the image of an owl which is the icon for the Bohemian Club across the street as well as the Owl Tree bar on the other side of the street. The Bohemian Club spends their summers at the Bohemian Grove where there is a 40' owl made of stone (or concrete). Nothing that huge here, but there is an owl plaque outside the club and the Owl Tree bar has several owls on its exterior as well.
A second location, Tiki Bob's Mainland Rendezvous, was on Bush near Kearny, where Pagan Idol stands today. Bob Bryant also managed the Tahitian Lanai and Papeete Bar in the Waikikian hotel in Waikiki when it opened in late 1956.
