Admiral Lord Nelson Pitcher

aka Nelson's Blood Pitcher in 1 collection

This is a white pitcher with a portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson on the front and "England expects every Man to do his duty" and "Admiral Lord Nelson Born Sept 29, 1758 ... died Oct 21, 1805 Aged 47." Under the spout is a picture of a ship and on the back is information about the battle of Trafalgar and a map with ships. On the bottom it is marked "Made for American Heritage by Wedgwood... Reproduction of pitcher commemorating Battle of Trafalgar... Original Liverpool Ware 1805 Victoria and Albert Museum" and "Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston Made in England." A legend involving naval rum and Horatio Nelson says that following his victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson's body was preserved in a cask of rum to allow transportation back to England. Upon arrival, however, the cask was opened and found to be empty. The [pickled] body was removed and, upon inspection, it was discovered that the sailors had drilled a hole in the bottom of the cask and drunk all the rum, hence the term "Nelson's blood" being used to describe rum.
