Tonga Lei Cobra's Fang Mug
aka Don The Beachcomber Cobra's Fang Mug in 1 collection
This large mug has a cobra wrapped around it three times at bottom and then separates from the side to form a handle before arching back over the top rim. It is marked "Vermonde" on bottom. This mug is pictured in The Tonga Lei's menu. The Tonga Lei was a restaurant and motel on the Pacific Coast Highway in scenic Malibu, and operated from 1961 and into the '70s (1977?), when it became a Don the Beachcomber. The Tiki-Ti has had a brown glazed one of these Cobra's Fang mugs on display for many years (also pictured under "Cobra's Fang" on their website's cocktail listing), and this makes sense because Ray Buhen used to work for Don the Beachcomber. Vermonde made other mugs for Don the Beachcomber also. It is unclear if this mug was used at the Hollywood Don the Beachcomber as well. There is both a darker brown glaze and a honey yellow glaze version of this mug.
