Popo's Gourdware Mug - for Kelbo's Hawaiian BBQ
in 0 collections
These gourdware ceramics with handle were marked and used at a number of bars, including Kelbo's in Los Angeles, The Dunes in Palm Springs, Pat O'Brien's in New Orleans, and the Papagayo Room in San Francisco. They were also issued without place markings given. It has been speculated "Popo" refers to the noted mixologist José "Popo" Galsini because he worked for a time at Kelbo's and at many other locations in his storied career. However, the bottom of these vessels is stamped "Gourdware Popo Pasadena" which sounds like an entirely different business, located either in Pasadena, CA or Pasadena, TX. Seems unlikely that Galsini was running a ceramics studio on the side and supplying bespoke gourd vessels for each new bar he worked at across the country.
Each of these gourdware pieces measures 3" tall by 6 1/4" long.
