This Tiki mug is shaped like one of the two famous Tikis which guard the Puuhonua o Hōnaunau (Place of Refuge) at the Puuhonua national historic site. "Na Kaua E Pale" translates to "Who Guarded In The War." This one has a headdress with heavy vertical lines/ridges and more lines on the chin, compared to the second of the pair which has simpler details on the headdress and chin. It also has a square base, whereas the other has a round base. This is the Kilauea Sunset Style which has gradations of red at bottom that gradually turn to yellow at top. This version of the Sunset Style has a crawled glaze. Crawling is where the molten glaze withdraws into 'islands' leaving bare clay patches. In this case, the bare patches are black underneath.
