The Mai-Kai opened in 1956 and they added the Molokai Bar in 1958 with the beautiful hula girl figurehead carving that inspired this mug. Original designer for the Molokai Maiden carving on display at the Mai-Kai is unknown, but the idea for this mug version was originally conceptualized by Swanky, sculpted by Crazy Al, and manufactured by Swank Pad Productions and Bone Productions. Licensed with the Mai-Kai and first premiered at Tiki Oasis 2014. The First 50 Mugs are Artist Proofs, One of a Kinds, and Deluxe Glazes in editions of up to, but not more than 10. After that are larger editions, including Kona Seafoam in an edition of 50 and Mango in an edition of 25. All are numbered and dated.
The red lava glaze (Mauna Loa's Minions glaze) was previously released with other Crazy Al designs in limited runs of 25. This, however, is a one-off using this glaze technique, called an artist proof but not really a proof as the glaze recipe had been perfected years earlier...
