This all-white mug is of a man with a very large belly, with his arms reaching up in the air. Sash is tied around his waist, with a bow in the middle. "House of Hong, Waikiki, Hawaii" printed on back.
A Hotei is not technically a depiction of the Buddha but is known in the west as the "Laughing Buddha" or "Happy Buddha".
This mug was used to serve the "Happy Buddha" cocktail at the House of Hong in Waikiki during the 1960s.
The "Happy Buddha" from the Red Chamber Bar of the House Of Hong restaurant, Waikiki. Circa 1960s: 4 oz Guava nectar, ½ oz Rose’s lime juice cordial (1/4 oz fresh lime juice & 1/4 oz rich simple syrup is often substituted), ¼ oz Cointreau, 1½ oz Okolehao (a quality bourbon or rye is often substituted).
Shake well with plenty of crushed ice. Pour into a porcelain Buddha (Hotei) mug
