In the fictional Star Wars universe, carbonite was a liquid substance that was made from carbon gas and could change into a solid through rapid freezing. Goods could be encased in carbonite for preservation, through a process known as carbon-freezing. In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader orders Han Solo to be encased in carbonite, and he is not seen until later in The Return of The Jedi where Jabba the Hut has the carbonite-encased Han on display as an ornament in his palace.
