Golden Coconut - 1978 - Coco Palms Resort 25th Anniversary
in 0 collections
This is a mug shaped like a coconut with a gold glaze finish. It is from the Coco Palms, once the most famous resort in Hawaii where Elvis shot the film, Blue Hawaii (1961). After a hurricane in the 1990s, the resort was shuttered and despite many plans to re-open, has remained abandoned. The following is a quote from Bob Jasper, CCP Entertainment Site Manager Coco Palms Consultant Roberts Tours, 8/16/2014, about this mug: "It is unusual to find a mug with the base and anniversary plaque. Every five years, the hotel (Grace Buscher) would come up with something different to give to VIP guests celebrating an anniversary. Until recently, I had not seen the mug with a base. Following that anniversary, they started using the golden coconut for a drink, as you saw on the menu. People were not supposed to keep the coconut, but I think some did."
*According to Bob and Leroy at Oceanic Arts, this gold coconut mug is a color variation of the original coconut mug design by Stella Bodey. This mug was commissioned in the 1960s by OA to Spurlin Ceramics as the basis of the OA table lamp for the Coco Palms Resort.
