This is a mug caricature of Hunter S. Thompson in signature hat and Aloha shirt from his Fear and Loathing days (as Raoul Duke, played by Johnny Depp in the 1998 film version).
Although this mug was marketed as "Doctor Gonzo", Doctor Gonzo was actually Hunter's attorney (played by Benicio del Toro in the 1998 film version)
It's a bit confusing since "Gonzo" also applies to Hunter as well, and the just "Gonzo" on the reverse of the mug seems to make this more clear.
Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism that is written without claims of objectivity, often including the reporter as part of the story using a first-person narrative. The word "gonzo" is believed to have been first used in 1970 to describe an article about the Kentucky Derby by Hunter S. Thompson, who popularized the style.
