Opened around 1972.

Until 1999 when it closed, this restaurant was part of the adjacent Kon Tiki Inn.

The Inn was then home to a seafood restaurant called Steamers from 2000 to 2016. From 2017 to 2020, this location was home to a restaurant called Flagship, which appears to have been unable to withstand Covid closures. Flagship was replaced by Vista Steak and Seafood (current as of 2024).

The Coast Inn was built and opened in 1929.

The South Seas was established in 1936 as a pre-Tiki bar and most of its decor shown in photos below was in place by 1941.

There were actually two bars at the Coast Inn location. Part of the charm of both bars was that tropical aquarium fish tanks were used for the bar counter tops. The upstairs bar, known as the Tap Room, was quiet, dark and sophisticated. But the downstairs bar, called the South Seas, with its Polynesian atmosphere, invited customers to let down their hair.

The location, according to past owners, started with military servicemen and local young people, surfers, and more of a "straight" crowd, but began to see more and more of a gay crowd in the 70s until it became known as more of a gay bar by the mid 1980s. This coincided with a change of the name to the "Boom Boom Room" in 1978 by the new owner.

The "Boom Boom Room" shut its doors in 2007.

However, the Coast Inn endures as of the present time (2024)...

Opened in November 2019 by Neal Warner and his brother Paul Warner in partnership with Love Handle’s Chris and Ally Benedyk and Flatland Kitchen designers Eric and Rebekah Nolan.

This is yet another newer bar that eschews the title of "Tiki Bar" but reaches deeply into the genre/category, borrowing much of its atmosphere and, of course, its drinks. The owners prefer to call Strange Bird a "Rum Bar" or "Landlocked Exotica" and acknowledge the tiki-leanings but state that they have purposefully kept things a bit more spare with what they consider "cleaner" and more "minimalist lines".

While there may be no tiki carvings on display, there is a ton of lauhala matting behind the backbar which is overseen by a taxidermied wild boar who looks like he would be right at home at a Hawaiian luau. Some contrasting walls are wall-papered in a large banana leaf print. Nearby booths are bordered with variated bamboo. The roof is blanketed with loose thatch panels that give a nice hut-like feel. Fish trap lamps, and round capiz shell lamps give plenty of mood lighting. This is contrasted with white painted boards on the front of the bar and white modern barstools, but this use of white calls to mind not so much a spare modern aesthetic as it does the sides of a white-painted boat's hull, and plays off all the nautical rope looped about.

Owner Michael Richardson is a longtime tiki bartender and co-author of the Frankie's Tiki Room (Las Vegas) cocktail book, “Liquid Vacation.” Chef Mike Lutz helms the kitchen, serving Hawaiian-inspired dishes.

Interior design was done by Bamboo Ben.

April 19th, 2025, the building was sold and the last day was abruptly announced.

Opened in 2016.

This Asian inspired restaurant has a cozy and classic lounge feel with its black tufted booth seating and tufted red chairs throughout.

Tiki decor is sparse, but there are some very well-done hula girl murals (although one or more might actually be better recognized as Art Nouveau paintings by Alphonse Mucha -- such as "Summer" with red poppies in her hair) on the exposed brick walls.

Behind the bar are a couple of Gothic style alcoves with small carved tiki statues instead of Catholic saints.

They feature a rotating menu of classic and signature tiki cocktails which have received rave reviews, and are served in tiki mugs. They do have a unique signature tiki mug created just for their location as well -- "Big Poppa" by Tank Standing Buffalo and Tiki Farm.

The Sillman Hotel was built in 1910 by the Sillman Brothers.

It was a five-story brick construction (125 rooms and 8 apartments) on the Southwest corner of Third and Monroe in Spokane, Washington.

The ground floor had a large dining room, The Monkey Room (a Pre-Tiki Tropical Bar), and a cafe, as well as a barber shop and lobby.

The Monkey Room was aptly named for the caged gibbons kept on display.

Old timers like to mention that customers entered the bar laughing and pointing at the monkeys and later, the monkeys would laugh and point at the drunken customers on their way out.

Sold in 1945 to Thomas F. Bowers, who sold it a few years later in 1950 to the Cardinal Investment Company.

In 1964, it was purchased by James P. Purvis. Purvis changed the name of The Monkey Room to the "Tahitian Dining Room".

At some point after this, the hotel was demolished. Today in 2022 it is a parking lot used by the Lexus dealer across the street on the North side.

Judging by postcards, this motel was built in the 1940s-50s.

Advertising from its later years boasted: "King Size Rooms & Kitchenette Efficiencies - Completely Air Conditioned & Heated - 'Tiki' Coffee Shop - Recreation Room - Heated Fresh Water Swimming Pool - Shuffleboard - 200 Feet Private Beach - Free TV - Free parking at your Door - Open All Year."

It began with a relatively simple facade and pastel/pink color scheme. Later, they went full "Tiki" with several masks out front and the "Tiki Coffee Shop."

This building was torn down to make way for Jade Signature Condos in 2018.

This is a Chinese restaurant with a selection of classic tropical cocktails on the menu.

No real tiki decor to speak of, however, it has a rich history and is tiki adjacent with mugs issued by both Tiki Farm and Tiki Diablo.

From the Formosa:

"The Formosa first opened its doors in 1939: making its new debut in its 80th year. Located across from the then-Samuel Goldwyn studio, stars like Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Elvis Presley would pop into the legendary Formosa Cafe regularly for dining and drinks. On any given day, patrons might have seen Ava Gardner dancing past the old, red leather booths, or John Wayne nursing a late-night scotch (he was caught making scrambled eggs in our kitchen one morning, after reportedly passing out in a booth the night before).

Among the interior design restorations is the full reveal of the iconic and original red trolley car, dating back to 1904 and is confirmed to be the oldest surviving red train car in existence. Boxes of autographed celebrity photos and storage units of original memorabilia have made their way back into the Cafe.

We worked with local L.A. archivists and hospitality notables who are helping to inform the new food and cocktail menu: a retrospective of Formosa’s culinary evolution since the 1920’s. The new Formosa not only transports guests back in time to the glory days of Hollywood, but with its new menu, patrons are given another way to connect to a part of L.A.’s gastronomic history, too.

Because one of the most prominent decor themes in the Formosa is the old black and white headshots, we wanted to give the newer areas of the Formosa a part to play, too: to tell a storied history of Chinese Americans in Old Hollywood. To do this, the Formosa Cafe team collaborated with historians as well as the original family to procure all the original photos and artifacts and bring them back to their original home where they belong. With the new addition of the historic Yee Mee Loo bar area of the Formosa, we decided to tell a story about the influence of Chinese Americans in early Hollywood: from a collection of ephemera and photos, movie posters and headshots, it showcases major Chinese actors from a chronological standpoint from Hollywood’s golden age."

This tiny house build is named "Fare Mananui" ("House of big magic/spirit" in Tahitian).

This location operated in the 1960s and appears to have been torn down around 1968.

Old advertisements tout "Shade Cabanas at the water with electricity and restrooms, Concrete Ramp, Tiki Beer Bar, Dancing, Charcoal Broil Your Steaks, Shell Gasoline Service for boats, Restaurant serving breakfast, hamburgers, sandwiches, and cold beer).

It is now home to Moonridge Marina, a private community located 1 mile south of the Parker Dam, fronting the Arizona side of the Colorado River.

Kona Lei opened on March 27th, 2013.

Miguel Escobedo (Señor Castaway) and his partner, Eduardo, opened this bar at what was previously Bar Hernán Cortés.

Kona Lei appears to have closed around 2015.

Miguel went on to open the Tiki Chateau in Madrid, which closed December 1st, 2022.

As of 2021, the location of Kona Lei is now home to La Hummuseria, a vegan restaurant.
