Xanadu Gallery
Menlo Park, California, United States (Closed)
Xanadu Gallery was owned by one of the owners of the nearby Palo Alto Trader Vic's; he was responsible for many of the Papua New Guinea artifacts on display there. This gallery, on the southwestern end of Santa Cruz Avenue, had a wide array of different Oceanic artifacts, including tikis, masks, drums, war clubs and canoes. Most were from Papua New Guinea, but there were a few other pieces from other islands. After the passing of the owner, much of the Oceanic art was sold, and this location was closed. There was also a remaining second Xanadu location in San Francisco at 140 Maiden Lane, but it closed later in 2015.
Don the Beachcomber - Dallas
Dallas, Texas, United States (Closed)
This Don the Beachcomber location operated from 1974 to 1982, and was one of the round, UFO-shaped locations. It was next to the original location of the Chili's chain of restaurants, which is still there today.
The restaurant was bulldozed to make way for a gas station some time in the '80s; a Stop N' Go is there now.
The Outrigger - Long Beach

The Outrigger was a Polynesian-themed restaurant in the Lafayette Hotel. The Lafayette is a historic building dating back to the '20s; it was operated by Hilton when the restaurant opened in 1958.
The Outrigger was one of four themed restaurants in the hotel that were opened at the same time: The Ivanhoe Room with the medieval splendor of King Arthur's court with tunnels, torture chambers, fireplaces, shields and lances; steaks, seafood, cocktails and piano bar. Outrigger Room off Broadway entrance has South Seas tropical decor, exotic drinks, "Polynesian" waitresses, Cantonese appetizers and dinners. The Gaslight Room on corner of First and Linden has Roaring 20s theme with banjo and piano music by TV personality Jad Paul. Fife & Drum has Revolutionary War period decor, lunch buffet.
It's not known exactly when the Outrigger restaurant closed, but probably around 1967.
The building was converted to condominiums in 1968.
The Reef - Long Beach

The Reef opened on August 8th, 1958, and was co-owned by George Millay, creator of Sea World. The original restaurant had interior designs by Bobby Mavis, and had "Hula Grounds" with many tikis.
Quote from a 1961 review from the Long Beach Press-Telegram:
"The Reef Is a large place with numerous dining rooms which accommodate thousands of guests each week. Bearing such fancy names as the Coco Room, the Tonga Room (both dining rooms), the Pali Room (large banquet facilities), and the Tiki Room (cocktail lounge), each is smartly tropical in decor. Most of these rooms provide their guests with breathtaking close-up views of harbor shipping and Long Beach’s sweeping skyline. For those who like to dine or sip cocktails In open air the Reef has a long handsome patio which also overlooks the water. In addition the restaurant has a huge turn-park area which can handle groups from 150 to 1500. Tommy Noh, the Reef's lively young manager, directs a staff of 70."
The Reef burned down in 1974, and was later re-built in 1980 by David Tallichet, one of the original partners in the old restaurant.
Tallichet and his company have run over 100 restaurants around the country over the years. The other Polynesian project he is well-known for is the Ports O' Call Restaurant at the Ports O' Call Village.
However, Tallichet re-built the new Reef building in a mining theme, that was popular around the country at the time, with lots of raw wood beams. He was later heard to voice regret that he didn't stick to the original Polynesian theme so many area residents fondly remembered. It's since been remodeled several times and the mining theme has been erased as well. The current restaurant isn't really tiki or Polynesian at all but it is almost 3 times as large as its predecessor and is still run by Tallichet's family-owned company, Specialty Restaurants Corporation, which currently owns 18 other restaurants, including The Castaway in Burbank, Castaway in San Bernardino, the aviation-themed Proud Bird ear LAX and 94th Aero Squadron in Van Nuys as well as Orange Hill in Orange.
Kahlua Hut

Owned by local restaurant moguls “Jake” and “Mama Jo” Tavenner, the Kahlua Hut was operated by Bernie Atkins and Bob McGeehan from spring 1967 until 1973.
Located in a former ice cream shop at Riggs Road and East-West Highway (built in 1955), its décor was “that of a South Pacific hut—thatched roofs, hurricane lights, can-like fixtures and, at least once a week, a hula band.” It seated up to 140 patrons, leaving floor space for seven-nights-a-week dancing. The Kahlua Hut’s pan-Asian and “continental” cuisine was initially prepared by Chef Yee M. Kiang. The restaurant staff fielded a team of duckpin bowlers competitive locally and nationally.
Featured on its drinks menu was the “Kahlua Tiki Tumbler,” offered in such a mug: “an exotic mixture of the finest rums and passion fruits, gin and vermouth.” For $2.15 total, the mug was yours to take.
After 1973, this location became The Outrigger, presumably with the same Pop Polynesian theme intact.
Today, as of 2023, this original 1955 building is still intact and house three businesses (Dry Cleaners, Bakery, and Pizza Bolis).
Polynesian Room - at the Yankee Clipper - Fort Lauderdale

The Polynesian Room was in the Yankee Clipper hotel, which opened in 1956. The hotel still stands, but has been re-named the B Ocean Resort and the Polynesian Room closed sometime in the mid-'70s. The Polynesian Room had seating for 300, and a full Polynesian floor show. The architect for the Yankee Clipper also designed the nearby Mai-Kai. The hotel still has a nautical-themed bar, the Wreck Bar, that dates from the same time as the Polynesian Room. The Wreck Bar has a window that looks into the hotel's swimming pool, and originally the hotel had "mermaids" swimming there to entertain guests of the bar. The mermaid shows were discontinued in 1965 but returned in 2006, when Marina and the Aquaticats brought back the shows as an homage to the past.
Thatch
Portland, Oregon, United States (Closed)
Thatch opened in northeast Portland in January 2007.
It featured a sunken bar, booths rescued from a nearby original Armet & Davis Denny's, lots of bamboo, and of course, thatch. Some of the tiki decor came from the nearby Jasmine Tree, which in turn got its decor from the Portland Kon-Tiki when it closed.
Thatch closed in late spring 2012, and reopened in late August 2012 under new ownership as Hale Pele.
Hale Pele

Hale Pele is a tiki bar in Northeast Portland, opened by Blair Reynolds, who ran Hale Pele until 2016 when the failure of his second bar enterprise (Americano) forced him to sell his share in Hale Pele to Martin Cate and step away. However, Blair Reynolds has another claim to fame in the world of tiki mixology: his line of flavored syrups sold under the name B.G. Reynolds which is still thriving.
Hale Pele opened in late August 2012, in a space that had previously held a tiki bar named Thatch. At the entrance, you cross a bridge past a small water feature, and are greeted by a large, sunken bar -- this allows seated bar patrons to be at eye level with their bartender. Behind the bar are a trio of large cannibal tiki carvings, these originated at Portland's Kon-Tiki and also lived for many years at the Jasmine Tree. At the very back of Hale Pele is the elevated Chieftain's Hut, a semi-private large booth, which can be reserved in advance.
The drink menu focuses on both classic tiki drinks and new creations. The bar has a small kitchen, so food is available in addition to the drink menu.
Voodoo Room
West Hollywood, California, United States (Closed)
This restaurant and bar opened in early 2006, with drinks served in tiki mugs, and tiki decor provided by Bosko. Signature sign by Tiki Al. The Voodoo Room didn't last long, closing in September 2006 after a dispute between the restaurant's owners and management.
Tahitian Lanai and Papeete Bar - at the Waikikian Hotel

The Tahitian Lanai, and its Papeete Bar, were located in the Waikikian Hotel, right on the beach at Waikiki on Oahu. They opened on October 1, 1956. Spence Weaver, of Spencecliff Restaurants, operated the restaurant, and Bob Bryant, founder of Tiki Bob's in San Francisco, was hired to manage the restaurant.
Bob Bryant said of the Waikikian and Tahitian Lanai, "Before leaving the Mainland for the first time, everybody has his own dream of what Hawaii and Tahiti will be like. In designing this hotel-restaurant complex, we tried to fulfill those ideas. We tried to make this a 'dream Tahiti' instead of just a duplicate of the real island."
The restaurant housed 40 tikis, including a large Marquesan that was purported to be at least 200 years old, and a number of black velvet Leeteg paintings.
Diners could sit poolside surrounded by tiki torches, in private huts named after Tahitian Royalty (like the Queen Pōmare IV Hut or Prince Hinoi Hut), or in the main dining room.
The Waikikian closed in 1996, and the items from the hotel and restaurant were sold in an auction that took place at the Tahitian Lanai.
Lotus Garden
Greenwood, Indiana, United States (Closed)
Lotus Garden was an older Chinese restaurant with a few tiki details here and there. The entryway featured a waterfall with a stream that ran under a small bridge; the bridge's railing posts were some nice wooden moai. The bar had some nice bamboo details, and drinks were served in tiki mugs.
There appear to have been a few locations under the same name over the years.
This Greenwood location closed June 30th, 2021 after 40+ years (opened in 1965). The restaurant re-opened in April 2022 at a new location -- 7327 N U.S. 31, Indianapolis, IN 46227. However, it appears that it opened with new chefs and a completely different menu, retaining only the name.
Kona Club
Oakland, California, United States
Opened December 16th, 2005.
A tiki bar from Doug Miller, owner of nearby Club Mallard. Interiors are full of tapa cloth and carvings from Oceanic Arts, and lots of bamboo installed by Bamboo Ben with the help of Crazy Al Evans. Highlights of the decor include a volcano behind the bar that "erupts" with smoke periodically, and a life-size bronze hula girl complete with swivelling hips.
Kona Club is situated just a block or so from Trader Vic's final resting place at Mountain View Cemetery.
