The South Pacific Restaurant and Guam Outpost
Chicago, Illinois, United States (Closed)
The South Pacific Restaurant and Guam Outpost (opened in 1954 by Wayne C. Sit), was a pre-tiki establishment located in the Loop in downtown Chicago.
Incredible neon signage created by the White Way sign company of Chicago.
You would enter this downstairs restaurant through a foyer with a tiki and a splashing fountain. Beaded curtains separated the cocktail lounge from the long dining room. Glass panels in the ceiling lit the room. Lots of greenery and a huge fake tree along one wall.
Lunch and dinner were served 7 days a week.
Closed in 1981.
Wayne C. Sit died in 2006 at the age of 88.
*NOTE: The below photo depicts Sit’s nephew Tom Go in 1962.

Albert Gee's Poly-Asian
Houston, Texas, United States (Closed)
This was the first location for Albert Gee's Poly-Asian.

A second location was opened at 5200 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX (sometimes listed as 5138 Westheimer, Houston, TX) by Albert Gee after selling his first location in 1962. This second location had, until recently, been a Dobb's House Luau location.
Both Poly-Asian locations advertised themselves as serving Polynesian, Cantonese, and Japanese cuisine as well as Tropical Beverages.
Jane E. Gee, Albert's wife, outlived her husband of 38 years but passed away in 2019 at the age of 98. She was a co-owner of the business.

Arnold's Beach Bar
Honolulu, Hawaii, United States
Opened in 1992, Arnold's is a good old-fashioned Honolulu Tiki dive bar.
This hidden spot off Saratoga Road was once a horse stable, but today Arnold’s is lined wall-to-wall with lauhala, decked in vintage photographs of hapa-haole hula girls and protected by tiki totems everywhere you turn.
You’ll also find locally made rum and drafts. Their mai-tais are touted as being pretty good and inexpensive.

Fuchsia Tiki Bar
New Paltz, New York, United States (Closed)
Opened in 2019.
This small tiki bar was a bit eclectic -- it had some traditional tiki decor (large tiki carving in corner and masks, mugs, and art on the walls) blended with nautical (netting on ceiling with beach cottage lanterns), as well as a large pirate flag and palm fronds wallpaper. The tufted green Victorian couch, chrome barstools and stacked stone walls may have felt slightly at odds with the other themes, but the overall vibe was clean and cozy and tropical.
They had a healthy selection of tiki cocktails (classic and contemporary) and rums to peruse, as well as a large menu of sushi (or appetizers if you just needed something to snack on).
The owners announced that September 30th, 2023 would be their last day of business at this location. Their lease was not renewed. They hope to secure another lease nearby in the future and re-open if possible.
