Tiki Bars
Freaky Tiki Tattoos
Kenner, Louisiana, United States (Closed)
This was a tiki-themed tattoo parlor that was open at least as early as 2009. The location is now home to Love Lost Tattoo since about 2013.
Kon-Tiki - Montréal
Montréal, Quebec, Canada (Closed)
This restaurant, the first of the Kon-Tiki chain owned by Steve Crane and his second restaurant after the Luau in Beverly Hills, opened in 1958 and was in the Sheraton-Mt. Royal. It closed in 1981. Some of the decor from here went to the Jardin Tiki.
Waikiki Supper Club
Lake George, New York, United States
This restaurant, which is only open in July & August, is connected to The Tiki, a resort hotel. There are polynesian dinner shows nightly.
The Tiki Bar And Grill
Gautier, Mississippi, United States
The Tiki Bar And Grill (formerly "Tiki Restaurant Lounge and Marina") has great views and has been a fixture for many years although it has had periodic shut-downs and changes of ownership.
It opened in 1969, and while it may have had great theming back then, the theming now is minimal, with bamboo lining the bar and a few inexpensive Indonesian style tiki masks hanging outside at the entrance.
Not much to interest the seasoned tikiphile here anymore...
The site was left in ruins after Katrina in August 2005 and re-built on a much smaller scale, re-opening in 2011.
Then, closed again in March 25th, 2020, because of the Covid crisis.
Re-opened in September of 2024 with new owners.
It doesn't appear that anything tiki, other than a new logo, has been added for the re-opening although the interior looks refreshed and re-painted.
The restaurant specialized in casual seafood, particularly gumbo, for many years. These are still available. However, they have an extensive new food menu on their website which offers many more options as well.
Family dining on main floor and a second floor for more refined dining or private parties.
But no cocktail menu, so they may not even have cocktails...although they appear to have beer and wine.
Known for live music on the weekends.
Jade Tiki
Bloomfield Township, Michigan, United States (Closed)
Jade Tiki opened in August 1977, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
By the 2000s, it had only a few tikis out front, and some tropical drinks served in tiki mugs.
This location closed in October 2011; the restaurant moved to another location in Utica, MI, but any traces of tiki (beyond the name) are now gone.
Tucana Tiki Bar
Birmingham, Alabama, United States
Tucana had its grand opening on November 3, 2023 at The Denham Building in Parkside, in Birmingham, AL.
It is owned by Nicky Vann Tisdale.
Their creative team includes architect Haley Treadaway with Black Design Architecture and Josh and Shelton Carnley with Studio Carnley for branding.
The overall concept is modern and streamlined without the dense layering found in traditional tiki bars (like in an old school Trader Vics for example). Rather, the atmosphere is open and industrial with concrete floors, lots of windows, high ceilings, and exposed duct work.
No evidence of actual carved tikis, masks, tapa cloth, or hula girls...
However, they do evoke some jungle island vibes downstairs with tropical wallpaper, upside-down basket ceiling lamps, some fish floats over the bar, lots of rattan furniture, and some tropical plants. A couple dozen individually framed Audubon style toucan nature prints adorn the wall alongside the stairs leading to the second floor.
Cocktails are served in a variety of glassware and tiki mugs.
The disco ball constellation room is upstairs. Nicky claims this inspiration came from the Tucana constellation in the southern hemisphere. But as tiki enthusiasts know, tiki has an uneasy relationship with disco...which marked the decline of the Golden Age of Tiki. Still, a dance floor in such a large open space seems like a natural move.
The Lanai Tiki - at Cravings Food Hall
Eastvale, California, United States
The Lanai Tiki in Eastvale, CA had a soft opening August 22nd, 2024 at Cravings Food Hall.
This venue is from Leonard Chan and, the other owner of Stowaway Tiki and The Lost Inferno in Orange County, Dominic Iapello.
The Lanai Tiki lives up to its name as an outside but mostly covered, long and narrow seating area located on the patio behind Ostrea Oyster Bar. You can sit on the patio to order or at the oyster bar.
One treat that some tikiphiles will be happy to see is some of the salvaged signage from the old Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach.
Kon Tiki & Conchita Tacos - Kansas City - Crossroads Arts District
Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Opened August 30th, 2024.
Not to be confused with the much earlier Kon Tiki located in Kansas City from 1963 - 1990.
This new venue is co-owned by Chris Seferyn, who has opened Kon Tiki with his friend and business partner Chad Troutwine.
The location, 1922 Baltimore Ave., formerly Beco Flower Shop — has been divided into two distinct spaces, connected via an indoor walkway and staircase.
One part is the tiki bar and the other part is Conchita Tacos.
Unnamed Tiki Apartments - Duarte
Duarte, California, United States
These unnamed Duarte Apartments probably had a very Polynesian or Island-themed name when they first opened, but have switched hands several times and are often just named unimaginatively as "Duarte Apartments" or after whichever managing company owns them from year to year.
This is a 30-unit courtyard-style multifamily property built in 1966, with 23,917 square feet of building and an oversized lot of 52,024 square feet. The property has a mix of two three-bedroom/two-baths, nineteen two-bedroom/one-baths, and nine one-bedroom/one-bath units. The property features two A-frame main entrances with tiki poles forming the frames. A round glass swag lamp hangs from the tallest points.
There are also tiki railings (or there used to be) leading up to these entrances.
Inside is a tiki roof decoration over the tenant mailboxes.
In back is a community pool.
The Lucky Tiki - West Hollywood
West Hollywood, California, United States
Opened March of 2024, after having been closed for over 20 years following the demise of its original location in the San Fernando Valley.
Run by Bobby Green and the 1933 group.
Re-imagined as a speakeasy at the Tail O' the Pup in West Hollywood, the 18-foot-long hotdog-shaped building near the corner of Santa Monica and La Cienega boulevards, which was also a Bobby Green project (re-opened in July of 2022).
Besides being the site for Tail O' the Pup, this upstairs locale was The Doors’ recording studio in 1970, and it was their office. They recorded “LA Woman” here. Jim Morrison liked the way the tile echo sounded [in the bathroom]. So he sang all the vocals to “LA Woman” here.
At the top of a staircase, the new Lucky Tiki has many of its old features on display, including a huge tiki by Crazy Al, but also incorporates many new pieces, especially hanging lamps by a variety of artists. Other details include some new Tiki tOny tikis, some green breezeway tiles that feature the Lucky Tiki mascot tiki at center, and custom wallpaper that also serves as the pattern for the staff's button-up Aloha shirts.
There is an outdoor patio with tables and chairs, and lit by several tiki swag lamps, also featuring a huge cartoony PNG mask by Vic Hdz.
The bar has their own food menu with coconut shrimp and crab rangoon and other favorites, but you can also order food from Tail O' The Pup downstairs.
The Jet Set
Newburgh, New York, United States (Closed)
Opened September 2nd, 2022.
A collaboration between the team behind Liberty Street Bistro—chef/owner Michael Kelly, his wife Alex, and executive chef Maggie Lloyd—along with designer Pat Nunnari and beverage director Jessica Gonzalez. Located in the old Blue Martini space, next door to Primo Waterfront.
Inspired by a visit to the Fuschia Tiki Bar, who also did consultation on the initial cocktail list.
The name "Jet Set" harkened back to the glory days of air travel, with bartender as pilot.
Although there was decor you would normally see in a tiki bar, with lots of tropical foliage and thatch, fish floats, and tiki mugs, there were no carved tikis and the tiki decor was rather sparse by traditional standards set by Trader Vic and Don the Beachcomber.
“Tiki itself has its origins in post-war escapism,” Nunnari says. “These guys who came back wanted to think back on paradise. It’s an Americanized sort of thing—it’s kind of fake in that respect, which leaves a lot of room for you to put your own twist on it.”
“It’s very hard to talk about tiki history without the appropriation of cultural iconography, specifically tiki gods, coming up,” says Alex Kelly, another partner in the project. “We get that, acknowledge it, and are not looking to add to the fetishization of Pacific Islander culture with The Jet Set. We have leaned heavily into the idea of mid-century modern air travel. What we aim to do at The Jet Set is focus on the quality of the cocktails our guests will be drinking.”
Best intentions aside, the bar did use plenty of mugs with tiki iconography and one of the most prominent pieces of bar art was a flip-up gate with a western-style painting of a cartoony pin-up native with a bone stuck in her hair (and holding a tiki mug). So, there was a little inconsistency in the application...
There was lots of stuff to love, though. The Jet Set had a very cool 30' aluminum jet fuselage with lit-up passenger windows in their dining area and a large outdoor patio as well. Unlike many tiki bars, they also had a great deal of space to work with and there was plenty of seating.
As time went on, they added to their decor with vintage style lamps and other details. They also became known for their live music presentations.
Unfortunately, they closed September 28th, 2024. No official reason given for closing...
