Tiki Bars
Kon Tiki - Shreveport
Shreveport, Louisiana, United States (Closed)
The Kon Tiki in Shreveport was opened in 1970 by Check Wing Joe, who operated it until it closed after 38 years of business, in August 2008.
The location is now Trejo's Mexican Restaurant.
Spa Tiki
San Diego, California, United States (Closed)
Spa Tiki was a large full-service spa. The spa took up two floors, and had tikis by Bosko sprinkled throughout the place. It felt very much like a modern, upscale spa, with relaxing music and dim lighting. There was a shop near the front counter with beauty supplies and soaps with a Hawaiian bent.
The investors in Spa Tiki were also investors in nearby Mister Tiki's Mai Tai Lounge. Spa Tiki opened in 2003, and closed in late 2009.
Tiki im Kunsthof
Dresden, Germany
Tiki style since 2002.
Tiki style coffee shop and bar. Ice cream from Neumanns next door.
Tiki Rock - Boston
Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Opened January 2018.
“Tiki’s all about escapism,” says owner and general manager Christopher Straub. “We really want people to feel like, when they come in the door, this is a portal to a new world.”
Inside the dining room, there are bright blue vinyl-seated rattan bar stools and orange-tufted vinyl banquettes, hand-painted scenes by Boston artist Joanna Ciampa, tiki masks on the walls, and a wall of scallop shells—culled by Straub’s mother in Chatham—near the restrooms.
One lounge area features several Design Toscano tiki head tables (one of which is a design based on the signature tiki from the Crown Plaza/Hanalei Hotel in San Diego, California).
The kitchen serves Polynesian-inspired food like sushi, Crab Rangoon, and barbecue skewers, with classic and proprietary tiki cocktails made with fresh juices, homemade syrups and eccentric garnishes.
Live music acts play here on occasion.
Tiki Tiki on Whyte - Edmonton
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Drawing its name from the original 1960's Tiki Tiki in Edmonton, this establishment opened on June 4th, 2023.
Owner Lonny Seguin was inspired to bring back Tiki to Edmonton after experiencing Tiki spots throughout Las Vegas and San Diego.
Both Tiki Tiki on Whyte and the Honi Honi Tiki Bar in Edmonton sport vintage carved panels from the original Edmonton Beachcomber, salvaged by appreciative collectors, and then re-sold to the New Wave bars.
This small bar has a menu of gastropub island-inspired fare using fresh local ingredients and serves tropical cocktails in tiki mugs.
The Tilted Tiki
Stillwater, Minnesota, United States
The Tilted Tiki was opened in November 2016 by Chris and Patti Goetzke in downtown Stillwater, Minnesota, just east of Minneapolis -- in the historic Grand Garage building.
The Grand Garage was built in 1882 and later renovated in 1924. The beautiful, historic building ushers you into downtown Stillwater. It was originally The Chicago House, then occupied by Stillwater Motor Company and converted to its current use in 1970. A number of different shops, restaurants, and even a salon, call the Grand Garage home.
Its location in the Grand Garage makes the Tilted Tiki's decor an unusual blend of tropical thatching and lauhala and more traditional wooden trim and stained glass accents.
They serve a selection of tropical drinks, and small plates of food.
Waiana Tiki Bar
Zürich, Switzerland
Opened in July 2023.
The Waiana Tiki Bar strives to convey an original South Seas atmosphere in the middle of old town Zurich. A huge palm tree on one of the two outdoor terraces with twelve and 24 seats points the way to the Polynesian terrain. The smell of coconut beach from a scent machine at the counter permeates the entire interior on the ground floor, the Tiki-style interior decoration, the service and the matching music create South Sea dreams if you want to get involved. The handmade tiki cups come from Niki's Tiki (a Hungarian craftswoman and daughter of a Budapest tiki bar owner).
With the opening of the Waiana Tiki Bar, Hunor Deák has fulfilled his dream of having his own bar in the tiki format. An anchor in the catering industry for 17 years, his gastronomic journey began at Morrison's , which is one of Budapest's oldest nightclubs. This was followed by bartending and bar manager positions on the cruise ship Aida, in the Café del Sol on Ibiza, in the English Loose Cannon Cocktail Bar and in the Committee Bar & Restaurant in Boston. Afterwards, he and his wife Betina De-Luca wanted to explore Waiana in Mallorca. But Covid and the subsequent war in Ukraine caused them to leave the island to find a new place for Waiana. They have been living in Switzerland since September of 2022.
Tiki Apartments - Redondo Beach
Redondo Beach, California, United States
This Redondo Beach apartment building is from the '60s and still has plenty of tikis, both in front of the building and in the pool courtyard. It's particularly notable for its large, beautifully lettered sign that simply says "Tiki". It is just blocks from the beach.
Some of the apartment building's tikis are speculated to have been carved by students of Trader Luke, Mike & George Gildea (and friends from Manhattan Beach), who were known for their unique cartoon-like and elongated mouths on their carvings.
Documented on page 221 in Sven Kirsten's The Book of Tiki (and 150/153 in Tiki Style).
Kon Tiki Lounge
Tucson, Arizona, United States
The Kon Tiki Lounge (no relation to the Steven Crane Kon-Tiki chain) is a classic original tiki bar. Open since 1961 according to the old Critiki site (January 30th, 1962 according to the Arizona Daily Star and 1963 according to the Kon Tiki website), the Kon Tiki Lounge has seen modern-day Tucson grow up around it on all sides. It is tucked back a bit on its busy street, surrounded by strip malls and small office buildings. The small-looking building feels a bit out-of-place. There is an almost lush little garden area out front, with tikis and a small "water feature" -- Tucson's arid climate wouldn't easily support a pond, so a tiled mosaic pond is in its place, with a small walkable bridge over it. To the left of the building was a great old Milan Guanko tiki originally purchased from Gray's Nursery and which was eventually brought in to the outdoor patio area for its protection.
Inside, the restaurant is dark and mysterious, with no windows, and much of the original decor still in place. A former aviary behind the bar is a jarring flash of light -- it used to house parrots, then a lizard cage, now it is used as an outdoor patio space. Large bamboo, gorgeous light fixtures, and tikis aplenty are throughout. The room is structured with smaller sub-rooms encased by bamboo and thatch dividers, giving a feeling of coziness and mystery.
The menus are standard fare for an old tiki bar -- barbecue ribs & similar items for food, and lots of tropical drinks (though a bit on the sweet & sugary side).
Today, the Kon Tiki's future continues to look very bright. It has been kept open through the years with a never-ending supply of college kids who love the place and keep it packed on weekends. These people are who we have to thank for keeping the place alive, but it's a bit more enjoyable when visited earlier in the day or on a weeknight, when the music is more in keeping with the environs and the place isn't so packed with bodies that the decor can't be seen.
In recent years the management has been working on spiffing up the place, while keeping it classic. The Kon Tiki now has their own tiki mug, designed for the Milan Guanko tiki outside (now in the outdoor patio), and has undergone some sprucing up courtesy of Bamboo Ben. A new Bamboo Ben bar looks like it has always been there.
Tucano's - Surry Hills
Surry Hills, New South Wales, Australia
Opened in August 2023.
From the Tucano's website:
"Where tropical breeze meets Italian seas.
Experience our version of Modern Tiki, where tropical and Mediterranean flavours meet. (Tucano is Italian for toucan!)
Whether you’re after dinner, drinks, or disco party vibes set to our funky soundtrack, Tucano’s is a colourful local Surry Hills bar where we encourage you to wet your beaks."
*Not to be confused with the popular Brazilian grill restaurant chain of the same name in the US.
Tucano's is a bit misleading with describing itself as "Modern Tiki" but at least they acknowledge that it is their "version" and that there is some fusion with other genres going on (zebra and leopard upholstered furniture, disco night, and original tropical cocktails that tilt more toward Miami than Polynesia).
"Tiki" seems to be the leading buzzword when people really just mean "jungle" or "tropical" or "beachy". However, Tucano's does seem like a fun place and the cocktails sound good as well.
Ken's Hula Hut
Los Angeles, California, United States (Closed)
Originally called just the "Hula Hut" when it opened 10/30/1936. This pre-Tiki south seas inspired nightspot had little decor but plenty of music and dancing girls.
It modeled itself on the success of Bob Brooks and his 7 Seas nightclub in Hollywood.
Ken Young took over the Hula Hut circa 1940. As “Ken’s Hula Hut,” it lasted for about two years. The building was demolished in December 1965.
The site is now home, as of 2020, to the Beverly La Jolla Tower, a 6-story building with high-end office spaces for lease.
Kon Tiki - Kansas City
Kansas City, Missouri, United States (Closed)
Opened March 1963.
The Kon Tiki opened as part of the new La Louisiane Restaurant, owned by Rube Levine and Jimmy Sholtz -- featuring steaks, seafood, and Italian cuisine.
Rube and Jimmy retained Mr. Edward Chun, formerly of the Polynesian Room of the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. Mr. Chun was nationally famous for his Cantonese specialties, and personally supervised the preparation of the Kon Tiki's Cantonese creations.
Later, La Louisiane became House of Chun, so presumably Mr. Chun took over the main restaurant as well.
This space was reputed to have become a gay bar in its later years.
Kon Tiki was open until 1990.
The area, south of Linwood Boulevard to 34th Street, between Main and Gillham, was deemed blighted and ridden with crime in drugs in the late 1980s, and these buildings, as well as other homes, apartments, and commercial buildings, were demolished in the early and mid-'90s as part of the so-called "Glover Plan" to be replaced by the Midtown Marketplace development, a large commercial development anchored by big box retailers Home Depot and Costco.
