Tiki Bars
Shipwrecked Tiki Bar - Davis
Davis, California, United States
Opened August 4th, 2023.
The bar is owned by partners Melissa and Nate Yungvanitsait, owners of Northern California restaurant chain University of Beer.
Tiki purists will declare this is more of a pirate themed bar than a true tiki bar, and they may have a point, but there are also enough of the trappings of tiki bars that we all know and love to make this a worthwhile visit if you are in the area.
As has been pointed out time and again, tiki bars thrive on layering more and more details as the years go on with the "more is more" effect. So if patrons clamor for more tiki, then perhaps each successive visit will unveil more tiki.
As it stands now, here is what you will encounter:
The entrance is a beach-themed area with some tables, huts, a few very cheap tikis (including some plastic ones). You can order at the bar from here.
Going down the hallway, there’s a lounge section that’s nautical-themed including a nice photo op stop, giant squid arms made from metal, and some granite tiled walls.
The last section is a series of booths that are nominally themed as pirate jails, plus more pirate decor including a room with artifacts.
South Seas Tiki & Golf Lounge - Louisville
Louisville, Kentucky, United States
Opened by Shawn Cantley in May of 2022.
This is not a traditional tiki bar in the mold of Trader Vic's or Don the Beachcomber, with a dark, intimate, and immersive space layered in Polynesian artifacts and art.
Rather, Shawn went for more of a vacation vibe pulling from Hawaiian, Jamaican, and Mexican beach and surfer culture.
South Seas is an 8,400 square foot two-story space with an additional 1,600-square-foot outdoor deck. This is huge, and aside from a traditional bar set-up flanked by booths, there is a large dining hall area, a large outdoor patio, and a miniature golf course with a cocktail theme. This course offers lots of photo opportunities with a life-size "Don" zombie, giant octopus, planet Saturn, and other fantastical props.
*NOTE: December of 2024, the location was purchased by new owners, Ruth Gao and her husband. They have expressed a desire to keep the venue as-is but add on to it with more Hawaiian-style food and tiki cocktail options moving forward.
Waikiki Speaki-Tiki Bar
Trieste, Italy
Opened September 23rd, 2021.
This tiki bar and restaurant is close to the harbor of Trieste (Italy).
The Secret Tiki Temple
Jacksonville, Florida, United States (Closed)
This thinly veiled speakeasy tiki bar was located within the Pagoda Chinese Restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida.
The restaurant had been open since 1975, but the newer edition of the Secret Tiki Temple came about in 2017 or so.
The exterior sign highlighted that there was a tiki lounge and the murals on the exterior showed frolicking pandas as well as tikis.
Inside, the space was exclusively a Chinese style restaurant until you reached the hidden lounge of the Secret Tiki Temple.
Once inside the temple, the interior was richly layered and had tikis, Elvis paintings, fish floats, fish traps, colored mood lighting and basically everything you would expect from a vintage style tiki bar.
Closed April 26th, 2024.
Grass Skirt Tiki Room - Columbus
Columbus, Ohio, United States (Closed)
Grass Skirt Tiki Room opened in downtown Columbus in November 2012. The drink and food menus included both Polynesian yesteryear classics and more modern takes on tropical. Souvenir mugs were available. The decor included echoes of Columbus' beloved Kahiki Supper Club, with contributions from local tikiphile collectors and craftspeople. There were beachcomber lamps, pufferfish, large tikis, and a lava wall, and even some bamboo pieces that originated at the Kahiki. The bar closed in September 2019.
South Shore Tiki Lounge
Kihei, Hawaii, United States
Opened @ 2006.
A tiki bar & restaurant, tucked into a shopping center in Kihei. The decor is a mix of Polynesian Pop and surfing, with plenty of bamboo and some tikis. The inside portion is nice and dark, and there is a spacious outdoor patio. They have other things on their menu but are primarily known for their pizza. Beach Bumz is in the same shopping center.
Tiki Lounge - at The Stearns Motor Inn
Ludington, Michigan, United States
The Tiki Lounge (opened in 1968) is located in the historic Stearns Motor Inn, which was built in 1901 and was the first sizeable hotel in Ludington (and still one of the few). While the Tiki Lounge has a few nice pieces of Witco, and will grudgingly make you a Mai Tai, this is essentially a beer-focused dance club (the website proudly advertises "10-foot video screens").
Sneeki Tiki - at the Best Western Premier Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Centre
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (Closed)
This bar and restaurant opened in September of 2018 on the street level of the Best Western Premier Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Centre.
The bar and restaurant was known for offering live music on select nights.
However, it closed @2020.
RedFrog Tiki Bar - aboard the Mardi Gras Carnival Cruise Ship
Port Canaveral, Florida, United States
The new Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras set sail on Saturday, July 31, 2021, marking the first official passenger cruise from Port Canaveral since the pandemic began in 2020. The ship has a capacity of 6,500 passengers and 20 decks, making it the eighth largest cruise ship in the world. The Mardi Gras is also the first ship in North America powered entirely by liquefied natural gas.
Note, there was also a much smaller Mardi Gras ship launched in 1972... but this one dwarfs it in comparison.
The 2021 Mardi Gras specializes in Caribbean cruises. It is docked and leaves out of Port Canaveral, Florida, United States.
The RedFrog Tiki Bar is located on the 5th level Lido deck and is the first of 3 RedFrog Tiki Bars planned, with the Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee next in line.
Carnival Celebration's Red Frog Tiki Bar opened when the ship was completed on November 2, 2022.
These Red Frog Tiki Bars are distinct from the Red Frog Pubs or Red Frog Rum Bars on other ships in this line.
The Carnival Mardi Gras' bar is 2 stories tall and has both bar and dining table seating. They have extensive themed decoration including some Oceanic Arts style lights and some Oceanic Arts Papua New Guinea masks and other hangings.
The bar features a wide array of rums listed by region but the bar name reflects their line of beers which is served on tap. They do have unique branded tiki mugs and mai tai glasses available for sale as well as other merch.
High Roller Tiki Lounge - Alisal Road - Solvang
Solvang, California, United States
High Roller re-located to this location in July of 2020 from 1636 Copenhagen Drive to 433 Alisal Rd.
All of the drinks served are variations on tropical drinks, using wine as the base instead of rum or other hard liquor. The space is thoroughly decorated with lauhala and tiki tchotchkes, and souvenir mugs are available.
Solvang was founded by a group of Danes who traveled west to establish a Danish community far from Midwestern winters. The city is home to a number of bakeries, restaurants, and merchants offering a taste of Denmark in California. The architecture of many of the façades and buildings reflects traditional Danish style. Additionally, since Solvang is in the heart of wine country, you can easily visit up to 20 different wine tasting rooms within walking distance, so remember to pace yourself!
*NOTE: In addition to the main bar, there is a separate entertainment space with stage for live music - Club 433 - just off the patio and feet from the main bar.

Shipwreck 7th Tiki Bar
Fort Worth, Texas, United States
Opened August 15th, 2023.
From Owen McGrath, who previously opened The Shot Cellar, also on Foch Street, in 2019; and Michele Kettle, his business partner at ShipWreck & The Shot Cellar, who also owns a cocktail bar in Midland called The Buffalo Nickel.
Premise: "Serving new and re-imagined Tiki Cocktails for our re-telling of the great adventures of Captain Jeffrey Alexander on the immersive eternal Jade Island."
This bar has a definite slant toward pirate and nautical but plenty of tiki details as well.
It is a large space and they use quite a bit of video projection on walls and ceiling. They also use audio for different drinks and scenarios for an immersive effect that must be experienced in person to be truly appreciated.
They also have an extensive menu of cocktails, with stories behind each one, and interactive puzzles to be solved which can unlock drinks for the persistent explorer!
