Tiki Bars
Tiki Chick
New York, New York, United States
Opened in January 2020.
This is a very sparsely decorated location without the large carvings and layers that you would expect from old school locations like Trader Vics. They do have some jungle monkey and hula girl wallpapered accent walls, some rattan furniture, and a few rattan ceiling fans. However, the peach-painted exterior, poured concrete bartop, and simple white globe lights in the front windows could call to mind any of hundreds of other differently themed gastropubs around the country.
Drinks are served in appropriate glassware or in generic tiki mugs and their drink menu offers an equal distribution of classics, signature cocktails, and machine-blended slushie drinks. They also have an extensive catalogue of rums and other spirits.
Their food menu offers fried chicken sandwiches, spam, and hots dogs among other things.
By all accounts their food and drinks are on point (and although the Pickle Painkiller is questionable, the restaurant's owner is Jacob Hadjigeorgis, the man behind Upper West Side’s wildly popular southern comfort food restaurant Jacob’s Pickles, so it gets a pass). Despite the interior theming leaving a bit to be desired, it's still a very pleasant place to spend an hour or two in the city.
Dragon Seed Restaurant Luau Hut
Jackson Heights, New York, United States (Closed)
Dragon Seed opened for business in April 1949 and closed July 1993.
The name probably came from a contemporary novel of the same name by Pearl S. Buck first published in 1942. The book describes the lives of Chinese peasants in a village outside Nanjing, China, immediately prior to and during the Japanese invasion in 1937. The story was adapted for the big screen in 1944, starring Katherine Hepburn in a whitewashed role as "Jade".
It was a very popular Chinese and Tiki fusion restaurant. There were beaded curtains and a wishing well. You could order Mai Tais and Zombies, which were served in tiki mugs with fruit garnishes and paper umbrellas, and they had a pu-pu platter.
It was also a favorite restaurant of Louis Armstrong and his wife, Lucille. The neighbor kids would go there while he was eating and ask for autographs and he would oblige them, but sometimes his food got cold so he would just eat the fortune cookies and when he got home his wife would make him a Dagwood sandwich.
After closing in 1993 the tiki decor persisted a surprisingly long time, especially a couple of moai outside the front door which were brought inside at some point and then disappeared prior to the last remodeling in 2017.
Since 2017, this location is Raices Colombianas, a Colombian restaurant.
Marie Antoinette Restaurant & Tahiti Bar
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec, Canada (Closed)
Circa 1956-1982.
This restaurant was especially known for its use of Canadian Beauce ceramic tiki vessels (including the much coveted pink Vicious Virgin Bowl with arm up) in its Tahiti Bar.
The Marie Antoinette is today known as Le Marie Beaupré Restaurant.
It was one of a chain of 12 restaurants founded in 1956, of which at least three had a "Tahiti" bar.

NU Lounge Bar
Bologna, Italy
NU LOUNGE BAR was founded in December 2000 by four friends – Davide Cavallari, Daniele Dalla Pola, Elena Esposito and Maurizio Gerosa. The four members gathered their national and international experiences together in order to create a Cocktail Bar in the center of Bologna and offer their customers a unique experience.
It is tucked inside an open galleria and there is seating within the bar area as well as outside in the enclosed galleria space. Focus is on tiki cocktails and the bar features a unique assortment of Italian made tiki mugs.
Daniele Dalla Pola left Nu Lounge and is known in the United States for his work at Esotico Miami (closed in March of 2024) and its neighbor bar, the Kaona Room.
Esotico Miami
Miami, Florida, United States (Closed)
Opened August 15th, 2019.
Located in the Canvas Condos tower, Esotico's chic take on the retro Polynesian Pop theme featured bold tropical wallpaper offset by black-and-white checkerboard flooring and a contemporary exposed ceiling. Lush greenery tied together décor such as a Hawaiian surfboard, muted sconce lamps and track lighting. Potted plants surround the patio while a backlit bar featured a bamboo footrest and nearly 230 rums, including Daniele Dalla Pola's own label, Alamea.
On 11/18/22, they opened a speakeasy adjacent space, the Kaona Room, which was accessible through either Esotico's interior secret door or through an exterior secret door beneath next door's Caribbean Water Supply. The Kaona Room is a bit more traditional tiki with its decor, and is more than just overflow seating -- including an entirely separate bar. For more on the Kaona Room, please see separate listing.
*NOTE: Dalla Pola announced the closing of Esotico Miami, beginning March 3rd, 2024, with the assurance that the Kaona Room would remain open.
Luau Hut - Dupont Circle - Washington D.C.
Washington, District of Columbia, United States (Closed)
This Dupont Circle Luau Hut, also sometimes called Luau's In-Inn Supper Club, was a short-lived sister location to the original Luau Hut location in Silver Spring, opened in 1970. It was owned by Moon Kim and Paul Malonson. There was another Washington, D.C. Luau Hut location on Capitol Hill.
Tahiti Nui
Hanalei, Hawaii, United States
Bruce T. Marston was a Californian serving in Tahiti as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. There, he met Louise, who was from Tubuai, just south of Tahiti. They fell in love, and moved to the town of Hanalei on the north side of the island of Kauai in Hawaii. There, in 1963, they opened Tahiti Nui.
Tahiti Nui became the go-to gathering place for Kauai's north shore, with musicians, hula dancing, and occasional singing from "Auntie Louise" Marston herself. Louise passed away in 2003, and Tahiti Nui is now run by Bruce and Louise's son, Christian.
Tahiti Nui makes an appearance in the 2011 film The Descendants.
The restaurant serves a mix of Hawaiian seafood standards and Italian food. The drink menu is limited, but they do have their own Mai Tai recipe, which they've been serving since they first opened. They still have live music and hula dancing.
The walls are lined with lauhala matting and bamboo, with Oceanic art pieces hanging here and there. The small round tabletops are painted with Polynesian designs, and the barstools are carved tikis. There is a small curio shop attached to the restaurant.
Trader Vic's - Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States (Closed)
This new-style Trader Vic's opened in late 2007 in the Planet Hollywood Casino (formerly the Aladdin), right across from the Bellagio fountains. The space sprawled over two floors and 11,000 square feet, leading to a much more plain and dull interior than is expected at a Trader Vic's. The management there tried to appeal to the young club crowd by catering more to the ultra-lounge, vodka-bottle aesthetic than an actual old-school crafted-drink lounge.
After struggling for two years, this Trader Vic's location closed in late 2009. The location is now a Cabo Wabo Cantina.
Harvey's Top of the Wheel
Stateline, Nevada, United States (Closed)
This was the restaurant on the top floor of Harvey's Wagon Wheel Hotel and Casino, also known as Harvey's Lake Tahoe. The Top of the Wheel featured a Polynesian lounge with decor by Eli Hedley, and had a logo "Sneaky Tiki." Mugs from Harvey's are still quite easy to come by.
The lower floors of the casino were heavily damaged by a bombing in 1980, part of a failed extortion attempt. The Top of the Wheel closed sometime in the early-to-mid 1980s. Harvey's Lake Tahoe has since rebuilt, but there is no tiki bar there today.
Tabou Tiki Room
Berlin, Germany (Closed)
Tabou Tiki Room opened in July 2004, with carvings by California artist Danny "Tiki Diablo" Gallardo, and artwork by German artist Moritz R.
Logo and signature tiki mug designed by Tiki tOny.
There was a change in ownership in 2006, and the Tabou Tiki Room closed some time shortly after that.
Some of the decor from the Tabou Tiki Room wound up at Tiki Brett.
