When Bali Hai first opened, it was called The Hut (1953-1954), and was a subsidiary of Christian's Hut in Newport Beach. The business didn't do well initially, until the manager Tom Ham took it over and renamed it Bali Hai. Atop the building, you can still see "the Goof," a funny-looking guy who was the mascot for Christian's Hut. Bali Hai developed their own mascot, Mr. Bali Hai, whose droopy-lidded face can be seen at the front door, and on the tiki mugs. Today, Bali Hai remains a popular Polynesian restaurant, with many fine examples of Polynesian art both indoors and out.
Bali Hai is located on Shelter Island in San Diego, along with Humphrey's Half Moon Inn and Trader Mort's Liquor.

Visited Bali Hai on my Tiki Oasis 2023 trip. Had dinner and got a Mr Bali Hai and kept the mug. I also picked up the Creepxotica x Goof on the roof mug and saw the band. Great night.

I was here for the opening night check-in for Tiki Oasis 2019. I've been here dozens of times over the years, probably going back to my first Tiki Oasis in 2006. My wife is fond of telling people that it takes 5 of their jet fueled mai-tais to get me out on the dance floor. Unfortunately, that's correct!

As a long time San Diegan resident (before I moved) I'd been to the BH so many times since 2004. I went in 1/2023 and dear lord, this place has gone to crap. The drinks are bottom barrel garbage, the view is great the food is OK. If you hit this, do it at lunch and don't waste an evening here. It's nearly garbage.
