Bahi Hut Lounge
1 Dec 2024
Fantastic! Genuine vintage atmosphere; not much has changed aesthetically since the late 50s or early 60s. Still possesses the spirit of a dark lounge bar and restaurant of that mid-century golden era, complete with old fashioned exotica tunes (a la Martin Denny, etc.), wood panel walls, and south asian masks. The drink menu selection is impressive and the cocktails are well-done, but it's clear that their food offerings are a distant second thought. It's small and intimate, and is some place I'd regularly visit if I lived in the area.
Mai-Kai - Fort Lauderdale
24 Nov 2024
THE Tiki Temple: perfect Pacifica atmosphere; excellently done drinks; hearty, gourmet food. And, most importantly, all with a Polynesian dinner show. Make a reservation if can, when you can, because it's whipped up both the locals' and national tiki-lovers' fervor and attention once again. Go! No excuses!
The Bamboo Room - Savannah
23 Nov 2024
A darker tiki ornament and idol-bedecked space with comfortable, relaxing accommodations. All around, The Bamboo Room nails all three criteria; great food, high quality and nuanced cocktails, and perfect, very traditional tiki aesthetics. A superb place for the tiki traveler. Go!
Wusong Road
8 Sept 2024
A semi-regular haunt of mine and my favorite Tiki bar in the Boston area, though pickings are slim in New England, generally. Wusong has both fantastic cocktails and a phenomenal food menu, which are a duo that's guaranteed to bring me back quickly. Their atmosphere leans a bit more into the "Neo-tiki" variety of interior design, though there still are heftier, more flavorful aesthetics from decades past all throughout. If you're ever in Cambridge, don't miss this one! Go!
Shore Leave
4 Feb 2024
While not a true tiki bar, Shore Leave's cocktail menu always has a well-crafted, recognizable rotation of tropical/tiki drinks, often with modern updates. Despite its lack of traditionality, it does pay light homage to tropical island aesthetics. Though, in the end, they make the greatest effort to capture the very young, hip, white collar professional crowd who aren't looking for or don't have a taste for immersive kitsch.
As a business, their theory of and ethical stances on tiki are bizarre and almost openly out of step with historical reality, which is a huge bummer. Not every tiki venue needs to be a Mai Kai or Vic's, but should their stances update with the evidence, I could see them leaning much more into what's defined that atmosphere over the past century some day.
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar
21 Nov 2023
A big winner in terms of atmosphere and cocktail-mindedness from Disney, here. They've put their own twist on Tiki, but not so much so that its flavor has been drowned out by Disney-ification via IPs (like with many other modern ventures, unfortunately). What I experienced here were very thoughtful and nuanced drinks like I'd get from a higher-end bar, but with the comfort of a Disneyland experience. Gourmet-inspired attention has been given to the food as well. Overall, it has the trifecta in spades; drink, food, and immersion. If ever you find yourself in Anaheim, go!
Kowloon - Saugus, Massachusetts
Date: Unknown
A well-seasoned, lauded, and beloved but very dated tiki venue just 30 minutes north of Boston. Is known as a genuine, local Saugus institution. Paintings of Hawaiian landscapes bedeck the walls, a large fountain pool with dining seating surrounding it, framed photographs of famous comedian and musician guests, and a healthy share of East Asian aesthetics, thanks to the heritage of its founders.
While the inheritors/owners go through a soul-searching process about the future and direction of their tiki past, they have plans to knock down the main restaurant and move to a smaller, more modern, custom-built structure on the same property. I can only hope they decide that a tiki palace is not only worth the continued financial investment, but that they know it will be a huge draw for people seeking relaxation and escape in an already-loved environment. Here's to hoping they revamp and renew, not knock and level!
