Tiki Mug Design

Spurlin Headhunter with Earrings

aka Los Angeles Islander Coffee Grog Mug in 2 collections

This is the early version of the Headhunter with a broad nose and large hoop earrings.

In a later edition, the earrings were removed and a handle was added (shown on bottom of page 56 in Duke Carter's Tiki Quest), possibly to make it easier to hold and less fragile.

There is also a version without earrings and a bone through the nose.

The glaze in all these variations is a muddy brown with yellow highlights that was used on several Spurlin pieces and is quite unique. The Los Angeles Islander menu shows a drink served in this mug called the "Coffee Grog" and this is pictured in Sven Kirsten's The Book of Tiki on page 163.
