The Thunderbird Mug - Matte Brown - by Red Wing Pottery - for The Thunderbird Hotel

in 1 collection

This ceramic mug was made for The Thunderbird Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota, by Red Wing Pottery in Minnesota, sometime between 1964 and 1967.

The mug features a dark brown matte glaze with a white glossy interior. The words "The Thunderbird" appear in raised letters on the bottom. No Red Wing mark appears on the item. It features two birds above a beaver, mimicking the iconic Thunderbird Hotel totem pole road sign.

The Thunderbird hotel was built in 1962 and demolished in 2016. While open, it hosted numerous conventions and events in a hotel and mini-museum with decor that was a distinctive nod to several local Native American tribes. Red Wing Pottery also made sample dinner plates for The Thunderbird, which apparently did not go into production.

*Note: There is a green version as well.
