Kapu Ki'i Tiki Mug

in 8 collections

This mug is shaped like the stacked heads of the two famous Tikis which guard the Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau (Place of Refuge) at the Pu’uhonua national historic site. Kapu Ki'i was inspired by Scott's last trip over to the Big Island when he went to visit the Ki'i at Pu’uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. This Pu’uhonua (Place of Refuge) is where a criminal could go to seek forgiveness if they violated the Kapu and seek refuge there. Since the remains of the chiefs protected the refuge area, the warriors would not be able to shed blood on these sacred grounds of Pu’uhonua and so they would end their pursuit of the lawbreakers who found refuge there.
