Babalu's San Diego Museum of Art Drum Mug

aka Babalu SDMA PNG Drum Mug in 1 collection

This mug was inspired by original native pieces in an SDMA (San Diego Museum of Art) show which closed on February 28, 2010. The show, entitled Oceanic Art: A Celebration of Form, featured 97 three-dimensional works, primarily from Melanesia and Polynesia, and objects from Micronesia and Taiwan. Plate 71 from the exibition book will show what inspired Mr. Henderson. This mug has a very traditional Papua New Guinea drum design featuring a mask with two birds facing away on the top and bottom. Body of drum mug is glazed brown and has a chiseled wood appearance. Top has drum skin with rope ties around lip. A very detailed piece.
