Tonga Room - at the Fairmont Hotel
15 June 2024
The Tonga Room was our first pilgrimage to an established Tiki Bar, after visiting the Islander in Coronado CA (near San Diego), which has closed shop since we visited in September 2023.
This is a must-visit for anyone even marginally interested in Tiki Bars/Tiki culture. The decor is everything you've heard of. LOVE the indoor rainstorms, and the band-on-a raft. Also appreciated the dance floor..... amazing how well my wife and I both dance after a couple of the drinks (!)
Speaking of drinks, everything we had was both tasty and STRONG. We enjoyed all the ones we tried. The food was also pretty good... but neither of us remember what we had. Wait service was friendly and attentive.
The patrons were another memorial part of the visit. We met a family at a table near us from Tonga who we struck up a conversation with. When they discovered we were celebrating my birthday, they gave us shirts they brought FROM Tonga to give to their relatives as a birthday gift. Such NICE people!
Our only disappointment was that there were no Tonga Room mugs available to purchase the date we visited. They only had generic ones and they only sell their mugs onsite. (seems like a perfect excuse to go again)
For us, it was a visit/pilgrimage to remember. Anyone into Tiki Culture should go at least once.
