Tiki Caliente 9 Event Mug Custom For Art Show
aka Tiki Caliente 9 Menehune Mug Custom For Art Show in 2 collections
This is a mug shaped like a male menehune standing atop a Tiki head and playing a ukulele. He has a mustache and is wearing a flower lei.
The menehune design was inspired by vintage United Airlines menehune statues and decanters which portray the same older, mustached character.
This mug version was originally designed by Doug Horne and manufactured by Eekum Bookum (John and Janet Mulder). A standard edition was available only to attendees. This is an even more exclusive smaller edition of pieces (22) customized by different artists, displayed at an Art Show, and sold through silent auction at the event.
As these are custom, each one is unique, ranging from a masked version by Tiki tOny to a mischievous blow dart hunter version by THOR (Tom Thordarson). Other artists included Sam Gambino, Doug Horne, MP (Michael Parton), Big Toe (Tom Laura), Christine Benjamin, Bamboo Ben, John Mulder, Janet Mulder, Sophista-Tiki (Dawn Frasier), Matt Reese, Kymm! Bang, Megan Besmirched, Woody Miller, Crazy Al, Dave Warsaw, The Boozy Doodler, Norm Daniels, Michael Fleming, and Eric October. Although the above 21 artists were named in the exhibit's description, it's not clear that all 21 were actually exhibited at the show (even though they signed up) but there is evidence of 18 mugs having been displayed with two being painted by Big Toe (Tom Laura). So, there were definitely no more than 22 exhibited, but possibly as few as 18.
