This is a ceramic sculpture from Munktiki's Yakimon line. The character of Matango is from a 1963 Japanese tokusatsu movie. It was directed by Ishirō Honda, and written by Takeshi Kimura based on the story "The Voice in the Night" by William Hope Hodgson. The movie has developed a cult audience over the years, partly due to its bleakness and unusual themes, particularly when compared to other Japanese fantasy and science fiction films of the same period

A stylized figure of a man wearing a simple tapa patterned wrap around his waist. This sculpture is based on the 1956 original made by Marc Bellaire (protege and partner of Sascha Brastoff). Bellaire did a series of similar figures (kane/man, wahine/woman, keiki/boy). Originals can be seen pictured in Sven Kirsten's Tiki Modern, page 28.
