Cheeki Tiki Bar
Cala d Or, Spain
The Cheeki Tiki Bar in Cala d'Or is mostly outdoor but there is also room inside. You will be entertained by some parrots in a chilled atmosphere surrounded by nice decor. It is a classic Tiki bar with a lot of bamboo but green and blue lights keep it bright. Cocktails are pretty good and they come in mugs from Spanish production.
*NOTE: Only open in summer season.
Mabu-Hay
Cala d'Or, Spain
Opened in 1982.
Mabu-Hay has both indoor and outdoor seating with plenty of rattan & bamboo furniture and decor. The interior is dark and moody as classic tiki bars tend to be, but if you want to sit outside on the patio/lanai and people watch, you can do that as well. They appear to have cocktails served in both vessels by Porcelanas Pavon as well as some of their own ceramic creations. There is a large moai out front and several other standing tikis throughout, that appear to be sculpted, rather than carved (perhaps out of concrete or fiberglass or some other material).
Pau Hana Lounge - Wood Dale
Wood Dale, Illinois, United States
This bar/restaurant opened in the beginning of 2022 in the site of the former Kona Kai Tiki Lounge (which ran @2013-2016?).
It is set in an unassuming strip mall, but the interior space is quite large, with plenty of seating to accommodate live music and other events which the hosts schedule regularly (as you can see through their social networks).
From the Pau Hana Lounge website:
"Pau Hana Lounge is your prime bar destination for authentic Hawaiian food with the freshest, premium ingredients and traditional, regional recipes. Located in Wood Dale, IL, our Hawaiian restaurant is proud to provide quality service, delicious food, and a warm, comfortable atmosphere. Our goal is to make sure that you have a memorable dining and drinking experience at our cocktail bar with your companions.
At Pau Hana Lounge, our bar and grill restaurant specializes in a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine made with fresh ingredients and expert techniques. In addition, we have a cocktail lounge and karaoke bar that offers premium drinks, live music, and even tarot readings for quality entertainment that you are sure to enjoy!"
The interior decor is a bit swallowed up by the space, but they have added some bamboo and thatching around the bar and some smaller tiki masks and other elements. The vast ceiling is broken up with some netting and lights but could use some swag lamps and maybe even an outrigger canoe. As with all tiki bars, they can certainly add more carvings, floats, lights, and art as time and budget permits.
Polynesian Room - at The Chow Family Restaurant
Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada
Established in 1972.
They advertise both Chinese and Polynesian cuisine and have a large room for each -- the Oriental Room or the candle-lit Polynesian Room.
Stepping into this restaurant is like opening a time capsule. The interior of the Polynesian Room has thatching, amber-colored lauhala matting on the walls, tiki masks, several standing tikis, and many vintage Orchids of Hawaii style lamps.
They are especially proud of their egg rolls.
Their logo used to feature a tiki but was modernized to the current logo showing a silhouette of a couple eating.
Maka Hiki Tropical Bar & Grill
Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong SAR China (Closed)
Opened in mid December 2021.
This was the newly opened space for the former Honi Honi in Hong Kong.
Maka Hiki translated to "new beginning" in Hawaiian and took inspiration from a wide range of island and beach sanctuaries scattered from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, Polynesia to Southeast Asia. Maka Hiki took over the space formerly inhabited by Bond, reimagining the interior in a material palette of timber, bamboo and eye-catching tropical wallpapers. The outside terrace also contributed to the feeling of escape.
Helming the kitchen was chef Russell Doctrove, previously of Maximal Concepts, who ideated breakfast, lunch and dinner menus to sustain the tiki vibes from morning to night. Signatures included the Hawaiian-style tuna poke, grilled mahi-mahi, and a 48-hour slow-cooked beef rib with tamarind jaew BBQ sauce.
Cocktails also formed a large part of the experience, with drinks by the name of Tik Tok Tiki, Dum Dum Give Me Rum Rum, and Maka Hiki Punch continuing the Honi Honi tradition of spiriting patrons away to a faraway paradisiacal beach.
Closed in May of 2024.
Aruba Motel & Tiki Restaurant
Tucumcari, New Mexico, United States (Closed)
Opened circa 1965.
This motel had 28 rooms and a heated swimming pool as well as an attached "Tiki Restaurant".
It was run under the Best Western banner as the Aruba until about 1999, when it was rebranded as the Tucumcari Inn.
The Tucumcari Inn became run-down and has been permanently closed for several years now, since at least 2019, if not earlier. The structure still stands but no sign of any tiki signs or decor.
Palm Beach Hawaiian Motor Lodge
Palm Beach, Florida, United States (Closed)
Opened in 1964.
This oceanfront resort had 60 units in its 2-story motel, a heated swimming pool, and a restaurant. The front part of the motor lodge was shaped like a Hawaiian longhouse and had torches at either end. The front sign was also capped by a torch.
The site lost most of its beach during Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and was not well maintained. The property changed hands with the intention of building condominiums on site, and although the new owners made small improvements in the interim to upkeep the property, it was only for the short term.
Closed September 22nd, 2014. Demolished April 2016.
Kawenzmann
Bamberg, Germany
Opened December 2016.
From their website:
"Kawenzmann means in sailor slang "Monsterwelle" (Monster Wave) and thus alludes to the origins of the Tiki culture of the ancient seafaring peoples of Polynesia. For us, Tiki means one thing above all else: exotic, completely casual and also a little ironic bar and drinking culture - so don't be too serious. In addition to iconic Tiki drinks, our own cocktail creations and some Colada variants, we also serve you over 60 types of rum from all over the world to enjoy."
Hawaiiana Hotel
Honolulu, Hawaii, United States (Closed)
Built in 1955.
This location has 40 units and is 2 stories. It closed in 2009 and was Beachwalk Student Suites Apartments for a time. As of 2020, the property was purchased and renamed Pagoda, matching the other hotels in this mini hotel chain that is expanding to have a location on each island.
This Honolulu location and the nearby Breakers Hotel are possibly the last of the 1950s era smaller hotels remaining in Waikiki. The Hawaiiana was a little less well-maintained over the years, but it has tikis throughout the grounds and is definitely worth a look. The Hapu'u fern tikis are especially fragile but appear to have survived.
