Tiki Bars
Lakanuki
Mammoth Lakes, California, United States
Lakanuki opened in 2003 in the ski resort town of Mammoth Lakes, in the Village. The decor is a sort of modern surf-tiki mix, with thatch over the bar and mural-size artwork on the walls. There are front and side patios, and an interior dining area.
Tiki Lodge Motel
Medford, Oregon, United States
This motel once had a great sign with a tiki on it, and outrigger beams jutting from its A-frame main office. Today, all traces of tiki have been removed, but the name and A-frame structure remain.
They've recently re-embraced the old tiki as their logo, so perhaps some re-tikification is in the future...
Moana Beach
Bilbao, Spain (Closed)
Closed in 2009. Remembered for its 12-foot-tall moai at the entrance and for the sculptured look of the interior to look like a cavern overgrown with tree branches on ceiling and roots on floor. They also had hula shows and served drinks in coconut mugs.
Aloha - Rochester
Rochester, New York, United States (Closed)
Aloha was opened in 1963 by Chwan Sheu and his sister Yu Tey Chi.
Sheu died in September of 2009, and was 83 years old.
During the period of 1987 to 1992, the Aloha was not run by the original Aloha family but they took the reins back over at the end and ran it at least through May of 1993. It does not appear to have lasted very long after that, however.
The restaurant now at this site is a Japanese steakhouse called "Sakura Home."
There was also an Aloha Motel located just up Monroe at 2729 (now the Clarion Pointe), and it appears to have been opened by the Sheu family who were entrepreneurs and opened at least two other restaurants and had a hand in helping many other Chinese immigrants to find work or start their own restaurants in the US.
A curious footnote - on January 5th, 1968, News Channel 8 WROC reported that a stolen tiki weighing at least 500 lbs had been found and returned to Mr. Chieu Shu (incorrect spelling or possible relative of Chwan Sheu), vice-president and general manager of the Aloha restaurant in Pittsford Plaza, who decided not to press charges against those found responsible. This video coverage is still available online.
Tilley Endurables
North York, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Tilley Endurables is a hat company in a suburb of Toronto, and they have several sculptures on the front lawn of their headquarters. One of these is a very large moai, approximately 15 feet tall. It was created by Bob Breault in 1987.
Tiki Inn Motel
Palo Alto, California, United States (Closed)
Built in 1955.
In 1982 this became the Stanford Terrace Inn, an independent, non-Polynesian hotel, and now called, The Stanford Group Extended Stay.
*Background rendering is by John Nicolini for Electrical Products Corporation but the sign he drew was not built. Note that Gene Costa was appearing at the piano bar. Gene was another one of the illustrators at EPCO. He and John were close friends. They both shared a love of art and jazz...and probably dancing girls.
Tiki Lounge - Los Angeles
Los Angeles, California, United States (Closed)
Opened in 1999.
Connected to the Tahiti Restaurant (same address).
Hawaiian Hot Luau
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States (Closed)
The Hawaiian Hot Luau was a Polynesian dance show and luau held seasonally from 1991 to at least 2009 at the Imperial Palace (1979-2012). The Imperial Palace started off as the Flamingo Capri (1959-1979). The location later became the Quad Resort and Casino (2012-2014) and then The Linq (2014-Present).
Kahala
Barcelona, Spain
Kahala opened on April 21, 1971 and was the first tiki bar in Spain. There were once 14 tiki bars in Barcelona, and Kahala has survived these many years because it has much to offer.
It still has all the original decor. You cross a waterfall to a long bar space, with various private seating areas, including King chairs. Staff wears Hawaiian shirts and the mugs are all original with a massive selection.
The cocktails and music may not always endear themselves to tiki purists, but if you are in the area, you owe it to yourself to check out one of the elder tiki temples still in existence.
Aloha Polinesian Bar
Barcelona, Spain
Opened in 1976, this is a very large bar with a 250 person capacity and bills itself as the largest tiki bar in Barcelona.
It still has all of its original decor, including an amazing front bar area with a bundled rattan/bamboo bar railing, several Gaugin inspired nude Tahitian girl murals, and tikis throughout. There are several small rooms and alcove areas for more intimate smaller groups.
There is an anachronistic large television at the end of the front bar-- probably as an obligatory nod to sports fans. There is also a large table soccer game (foosball to North Americans) by the emergency exit.
Porcelain style signature Spanish tiki mugs are used, although many show signs of chipping or cold paint loss and have been in rotation a number of years.
Tiki purists may not always approve of the music or cocktail authenticity, but this is common with many of the Spanish tiki bars. Despite this, the ability to experience such an early time capsule of a tiki temple should not be missed.
