Chung's Restaurant was a Chinese Restaurant with a menu of tropical cocktails served in tiki mugs.

Their reputation seems to have grown and endured, however, because of their frequent live jazz music sessions which ran from roughly 1977 through the early 90s. Many of these sessions were taped and are still available on YouTube, but they show little of the actual restaurant beyond rattan chairs, and a lauhala wall.

The Roosevelt Hotel opened in 1930, named after the 26th U.S. president, who’d visited Seattle in 1903. Its architect, John Graham Sr., was one of the city’s most prominent: the firm he'd founded was behind iconic city structures like the Seattle Exchange Building, the Frederick & Nelson department store (now the downtown Nordstrom), and, under his son’s leadership, the Space Needle. Graham’s designs account for the hotel’s distinctive, modernist Art Deco style. The 18-story building remained Seattle’s tallest hotel for decades, with 234 rooms and an ornately furnished lobby detailed in the French modern style. In contrast to the hotels that catered to residents (the norm at the time), the Roosevelt Hotel positioned itself as a traveler-oriented hotel.

The Lanai or Lanai Room as it was called, flourished in the 1960s. It was known for its "musical fountains" seen in photo below and their cocktail menu is notable for sharing tiki mug designs seen at the Kalua Room in Seattle and commonly associated only with the Kalua Room. In 1962, both the Roosevelt Hotel (the Lanai) and Windsor Hotel (Kalua Room) were managed by Gwynne Austin. Gwynne Austin had previously managed Hawaii's Kona Inn, the Halekulani and opened Kaisers Hawaiian Village... he left Hawaii to take over the Windsor in 1954.

In 2015, Provenance Hotels purchased the hotel, and began floor-by-floor renovations, spearheaded by Seattle-based Susan Marinello Interiors. Fully refreshed, the hotel reopened in 2017 under the name Hotel Theodore, a nod to its historic namesake.

*NOTE: Exact dates on the opening and closing of the Lanai are unknown but it was definitely open from 1962-1965.

Opened in 1964 as part of The Tropics (now the Caliente Tropics Resort) by Ken Kimes.

In its '60s heyday, the Congo Room steakhouse and underground Cellar bar, attracted celebrities. The Congo Room later became the Reef Bar.

The second attempt to establish a Don the Beachcomber in San Diego was just as short-lived as the first.

It opened in 1980, replacing the Barefoot Bar that had been there since 1962.

After Don the Beachcomber closed in 1983, the space once again became the Barefoot Bar.

Today, The Vacation Village Hotel is now called Paradise Point Resort & Spa.

The Tapa Room was a small tiki bar with tapa cloth and tikis covering its walls. It opened in 1971 and closed about 1989. The location is now a gay bar, San Diego Eagle.

The Tahitian Room was a Polynesian-themed restaurant and bar in the U.S. Grant Hotel's northern annex that opened in 1960. It closed 10 years later and the annex was demolished and replaced with a parking lot.

The Luau copied its name, logo and much of its menu from The Luau of Beverly Hills, but it's unclear whether there was any formal connection.

The Polynesian tiki restaurant and bar featured an interior modestly decorated with bamboo, fishing nets, rattan furniture and tiki lamps. Besides tropical drinks, it also served Cantonese food, and charcoal-broiled and teriyaki steaks.

The location is now a parking lot.

The Chi-Chi was one of a chain with locations also in Palm Springs, Hollywood, Riverside and Long Beach. The San Diego location opened in 1946 and included the South Seas Room. It closed in 1951.

As of 2023, this location is home to Urban India Restaurant & Bar.

Opened in 1946, the Hula Hut was a Hawaiian-themed bar located where the Tropic Cafe had previously been. It closed in 1965 and the whole block was raised to make way for the Westgate Hotel.

The Hurricane was a tropical cocktail lounge opened in 1945 by Sam Stutz and Edward Bolander, who operated a number of other bars/restaurants in town. The bar went through a long series of owners before closing in 1960.

This Hawaiian-themed bar and cafe opened in 1939. It remained at its original location (3827 Park Blvd.) until 1966 when it moved next door to 3811 Park Blvd. It closed in the mid-1970s.
