Tiki Bars
Trader Vic's - Shanghai
Jingan Qu, Shanghai, China (Closed)
This Trader Vic's location opened on December 31, 2006, and it was the first in China -- where one has to wonder if the famed Chinese ovens were advertised as such in this new location, and whether they had the same exotic impact.
The location was on a corner in the Jing'an district, at the heart of Shanghai. The entry of the location was flanked by two large Maori-inspired tikis, and the interior was light and airy, but did have an assortment of flotsam & jetsam hanging from the vaulted ceiling.
The location closed @ February 15th, 2008.
*NOTE: Their drink menu was a standard Trader Vic's style cocktail menu which has remained much the same since the 60s, but prices were listed in Chinese Yuan. Nowhere on the actual menu did it actually say "Shanghai, China" but it did have a list of all the international locations on the inside cover -- so was probably just the standard template for several international locations at the time.
Trader Vic's - Boston
Boston, Massachusetts, United States (Closed)
This Trader Vic's was in the Park Plaza Hotel (formerly the Statler Hilton from 1965-1976) and was closed when Hilton sold the hotel and it was re-named the Park Plaza in 1976.
A Legal Seafoods opened in this space around 1980. It then closed and later returned returned to Boston’s Park Square Neighborhood in 2022.
A McCormick & Schmick's was later in this spot for many years but closed in 2015.
The Park Plaza has done some renovations and opened two new venues inside, including Strega Italiano (closed in 2025 after 7 years) and Off The Common (neither of which are listed with the same address as the old Trader Vic's).
Trader Vic's - St. Louis
St. Louis, Missouri, United States (Closed)
Opened December 5th, 1963.
This was located in the Bel Air East (now the Ramada Inn at the Arch). The front entrance showcased at least 3 large tiki carvings by Barney West.
Closed in 1985.
Trader Vic's - Ward Avenue - Honolulu
Honolulu, Hawaii, United States (Closed)
This was the "Ward Avenue" Trader Vic's location in Honolulu.
"The Companies We Keep" by Bob Sigall , a history of Hawaiian companies, (and also confirmed by an article in the 1955 Honolulu Advertiser) states that this Hawaii location opened in December 18th, 1940. Four months later, Victor Bergeron sold his interest to the co-owner, Granville "Granny" Abbott.
Note the giant rusty anchor in front of the building both in photos and on the menu cover art. A pre-statehood drink menu is shown below...
There was another Trader Vic's location in Hawaii, at the International Market Place in Waikiki that opened later in 1967.
Trader Vic's - San Francisco
San Francisco, California, United States (Closed)
This new Trader Vic's location opened in November 2004, marking the return of Trader Vic's to San Francisco proper. Until the early '90s, Trader Vic's had a location in San Francisco at Cosmo Alley. This new location had most recently held the famous Stars restaurant. Renovations were rumored to be budgeted at $3.5 million dollars.
The restaurant had several dining rooms, many suitable for private parties. The main dining room and bar area were large and open, with many Papua New Guinea masks and very large carved tikis. There was a bit of a rough start as the restaurant first opened, but after a series of improved bartender hirings, the drink quality improved.
The restaurant never quite found its footing, and closed in December 2007, after just three years in operation.
Trader Vic's - at the Sheraton Bel-Air Resort Hotel & Marina - St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg, Florida, United States (Closed)
Opened in 1971 and closed in 1973 (possibly as late as 1975).
Photo below shows entrance tikis being moved into place just before opening.
This restaurant was in the Sheraton Bel-Air Resort Hotel & Marina, which earlier was the Outrigger Inn, which also had a Polynesian lounge.
Today, as of 2021, this location is home to the Magnusson Hotel Marina Cove Resort.
Trader Vic's - Bellevue
Bellevue, Washington, United States (Closed)
This new Trader Vic's restaurant opened in March 2006. It was located within the new Liberty Square complex, adjacent to a Westin hotel. The space was nearly 8,000 square feet, with a main dining room and two private dining rooms. The restaurant had lots of tapa cloth, and a large outrigger canoe, but was an example of the newer, modern, disappointingly sparse Trader Vic's.
The Bellevue Trader Vic's closed in August 2008.
Trader Vic's - at The Valley Ho Hotel - Scottsdale
Scottsdale, Arizona, United States (Closed)
Newer Trader Vic's location, a freestanding building on the grounds of the newly renovated vintage hotel, Valley Ho. The restaurant opened in Summer 2006, and closed in 2011.
Trader Vic's - at the Caribe Hilton - San Juan
San Juan Antiguo, San Juan, Puerto Rico (Closed)
This Trader Vic's was opened in the Caribe Hilton in 1961. It had a large A-frame entrance, with the front of the A-frame painted with rows of small, simple tropical-motif scenes, and an even larger, matching, swooping A-frame structure over a section of the restaurant that overlooked the ocean. The space is now called the Lemongrass Restaurant, and still has the larger, swooping A-frame structure.
Trader Vic's - Destin, Florida
Destin, Florida, United States (Closed)
This Trader Vic's location opened in March 2007 at the Palms of Destin resort. It was a half-assed execution of the traditional Trader Vic's concept, and was viewed as a disappointment. In August 2010, the restaurant split from the Trader Vic's chain, and continued operating as Sago, retaining the tropical theming for only a short time. Sago is now closed, and currently the palms has a Bistro that serves breakfast and lunch but it's more of a coffeehouse and it's not clear if the resort has a full-service restaurant as of 2021.
Trader Vic's Lounge - Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills, California, United States (Closed)
This bar was pieced together from remainders of the legendary Beverly Hills Trader Vic's, which closed in 2007 after more than 50 years. A few items from the restaurant were saved and relocated to this new lounge near the hotel's pool. The space was sleek, modern and airy - a sharp contrast to the intimate feel of the old restaurant. Tropical drinks and a few pupus were served in this small, casual space with an outdoor patio. Trader Vic's Lounge closed at the end of January 2017.
Trader Vic's - Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States (Closed)
This new-style Trader Vic's opened in late 2007 in the Planet Hollywood Casino (formerly the Aladdin), right across from the Bellagio fountains. The space sprawled over two floors and 11,000 square feet, leading to a much more plain and dull interior than is expected at a Trader Vic's. The management there tried to appeal to the young club crowd by catering more to the ultra-lounge, vodka-bottle aesthetic than an actual old-school crafted-drink lounge.
After struggling for two years, this Trader Vic's location closed in late 2009. The location is now a Cabo Wabo Cantina.
