Tiki Bars
Aloha Polinesian Bar
Barcelona, Spain
Opened in 1976, this is a very large bar with a 250 person capacity and bills itself as the largest tiki bar in Barcelona.
It still has all of its original decor, including an amazing front bar area with a bundled rattan/bamboo bar railing, several Gaugin inspired nude Tahitian girl murals, and tikis throughout. There are several small rooms and alcove areas for more intimate smaller groups.
There is an anachronistic large television at the end of the front bar-- probably as an obligatory nod to sports fans. There is also a large table soccer game (foosball to North Americans) by the emergency exit.
Porcelain style signature Spanish tiki mugs are used, although many show signs of chipping or cold paint loss and have been in rotation a number of years.
Tiki purists may not always approve of the music or cocktail authenticity, but this is common with many of the Spanish tiki bars. Despite this, the ability to experience such an early time capsule of a tiki temple should not be missed.
The Beachcomber Room - at the Talisman Motor Inn
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (Closed)
Opened in 1963, the Talisman Motor Inn had multiple restaurants for fine dining and entertainment.
The plan for the Talisman Motor Hotel was imagined after a trip to Japan with a vision of a Japanese steak house, garden, and overall design for business, modern banquet facilities, weddings etc. The hotel had their main dining room “Raffles” and their own tiki bar “The Beachcomber Room”. Within a few years The Beachcomber Room was relocated to the lower level and the original space was used for meeting rooms. The new “Beachcomber Lounge” did very well as a live music venue from April 1976 until it closed in 1991.
The Beachcomber Room's interior design was by Mary Orenstein of Toronto in a “Tahitian Style” featuring statues of Polynesian Warriors, a war canoe over the bar and South Pacific weapons. The band rested on “tons” of lava rock imported from California. It also included a 90ft. Polynesian mural.
This Beachcomber Mural Painting was created by Alexander Von Svodoba, an Austrian painter and mosaic artist. Von Svodoba was commissioned to create a ninety-foot mural in “rich tropical colours depicting a South Seas theme”. The mural was apparently removed and most of it destroyed when the Beachcomber was relocated.
The Eggroll
Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States (Closed)
Opened in June of 1971.
As of 2025, this location is home to WellCare Urgent care.
The Lost Lei
Austin, Texas, United States (Closed)
The Lost Lei opened May 15, 2019 in Austin.
Located in the basement beneath Capital Grill.
The initial opening was underwhelming with decor consisting of thatch over the bar, some inexpensive tiki masks on the back bar, and some "Skull Columns" (three structural supports wrapped with plastic skulls in the center of the space).
Add to this, the bar was almost immediately met with controversy for issuing mugs that were blatantly copied from the famous Three Dots and a Dash Chicago mugs. They also produced mugs whose designs were ripped off from previous Tiki Farm and Crazy Al mugs.
They did slowly make efforts in the wake of widespread complaints and removed the mugs from general use. Although many ended up sold on the secondary market.
They also issued some colorful Royer swizzle sticks.
Closed in December of 2021.
Rockaway Tiki Bar
New York, United States
Owner Amy Tichenor felt that Queens' best beach neighborhood was missing a proper tiki bar and filled that gap in April 2021 with the Rockaway Tiki Bar.
Rockaway Tiki Bar joins the other offerings of Arverne of the Sea, including Locals Cafe, Super Burrito, Cuisine by Claudettes, Vino by the Sea, Bar Marseille, Breakwater Surf Shop, Boardwalk Pizza, and Batesy’s BBQ.
The bar is located one block from the Atlantic Ocean and one of the best surf breaks in the Rockaways.
The food menu features poke bowls and dumplings. The cocktail menu is limited to a top 12, including a couple of chiller slushie drinks served from their machine.
Though small, there is some great tiki and vintage decor, including some carvings by Tiki tOny and a 70s velvet painting of a topless girl behind the bar (exposed nipple tastefully covered by a dried-out starfish).
There is also outdoor seating.
Bernard's Tiki Room - at the Arvada Tavern
Arvada, Colorado, United States
Opened in 2023, Bernard’s Tiki Room is located in the upstairs room of the historic Arvada Tavern in downtown Arvada, Colorado. You can enter Bernard's through the phone booth downstairs in the Tavern, hipster prohibition style.
Bernard's is generally open evenings after 6pm Thur-Sat competently serving classic tiki drinks, and is known to host various tiki themed events and live bands.
Bernard's features a somewhat less visually impactful tiki bar setting than many, all in one large, square room - but it is cozy nonetheless.
The Hukilau - Florence
Florence, Oregon, United States
Opened in 2018.
Pacific fusion restaurant and tiki bar on the Oregon Coast featuring daily cocktail specials.
Originally a food truck called A Taste of Hawaii (2014), four years later owners Christian and Natasha Jakobsen opened The Hukilau brick and mortar alongside Highway 101 in Florence, OR.
They have indoor and outdoor seating.
Queréncia Exotic Bar
Lecce, Italy
This tiki bar and restaurant is located in the city center of Lecce. Created by Cristian Pellegrino.
The venue mixes tropical, exotic and pirate atmospheres.
You can sit either in or outside.
The two rooms have a total of 80 seats and an outdoor garden with another 180 which makes this place welcoming, hospitable and very large.
Many of its features, such as the wooden counter, smoke created with dry ice, large tiki masks, rum barrels, pirates and even the treasure maps and materials such as wicker, recall an English-colonial style.
Bar Tiki - Clearwater Beach
Clearwater, Florida, United States
This bar opened in Clearwater Beach, Florida as of October 31, 2021.
It's located on the 3rd floor of the Marina Cantina by the docks.
In addition to their drinks menu, they also have a limited food menu with quesadillas, tacos, empanadas, spring rolls, etc...
Rum Depot Berlin
Berlin, Germany
Founded by Dirk Becker in 2011, the Rum Depot Berlin is THE place for rum. At the front you can find the store has 800-1200 rums in stock.
In the back is the Berlin Rum Club Bar (opened in 2008). They do the live-tastings here. The Rum Club also has their own tiki mugs.
Dirk Becker is the author of the book “The Big Book of Rum” and the host of the German Rum Festival, the largest rum event on the planet. The festival was started in 2011 and currently has thousands of visitors each year during August/September. At last count, the festival hosted over 70 booths, more than 150 brands and therefore also over 500 different bottlings!
*Note: From a tiki decor perspective, this location is lacking. It is simply a VERY well-stocked rum liquor store with a dedicated area for tiki mugs (and some of their own signature mugs). However, their mascot is a tiki head and they are very tiki friendly/tiki adjacent since rum is the spirit of choice for most tiki cocktails.
Waikiki Burger - Potsdam
Potsdam, Germany
Opened April 4th, 2012.
Located in Potsdam, Germany. Americans, especially Californians, might find it similar to the Islands Hamburger Restaurant chain.
In addition to burgers and other fast food offerings with a Hawaiian twist, they offer Hawaiian beers and cocktails at their bar.
On September 16th, 2017 they had their 5th anniversary party with a Hula dance show and live Hawaiian music.
The owner changed in 2023. The tropical atrium was closed by the new owner and all wall paintings were removed.
