Tiki Bars
The Reef - Casper
Casper, Wyoming, United States (Closed)
When The Reef first opened in 1961, it was advertised as Wyoming's first Polynesian lounge.
The Reef was designed by Lou and Cliff Sawyer, a husband and wife decorating team based in Palm Springs, CA. They also decorated the South Pacific Room and Beachcomber Shops in Palm Springs and the South Sea Club/Surf Room Restaurant in Anchorage, AK.
A newspaper article celebrating the exotic new hot spot describes the scene:
“On the Center Street entrance there are two picture windows. The window to the left of the door contains a five-foot Tiki god standing amid jungle flowers and sea shells. To the right of the door stands an eight-foot Tiki god. Above the door is a small shelf running the width of the building filled with rocks collected from Wyoming rock beds by local rockhound clubs.”
Lou and Cliff sold The Reef in 1970 and the new owners fought against a changing neighborhood which grew rougher and rougher with a reported knife assault in 1973 and in 1975, a drunk patron shot and killed one of the owners, resulting in the sale of The Reef in 1978.
It was replaced by a disco club.
Cabali - Oro Valley (Tucson)
Oro Valley, Arizona, United States
Owners Doug “Fini” Finical and Scott Mencke opened Fini’s Landing in the foothills, then came The Landing in Oro Valley in 2021, and then they were ready to open their new tiki bar...
Cabali, located next door to The Landing at 8195 N. Oracle Rd., hosted its Grand Opening on Friday, February 2, 2024.
One of the memorable centerpieces is a Mark Thomas Outrigger styled Moai at the main bar area with tentacles around it. Additionally, the space is decorated with a huge mug collection, black velvet paintings, and artwork, all illuminated by custom crafted swag lamps and trimmed out with plenty of bamboo and other natural materials.
The bar is also a precursor to the soon-to-be-released documentary “Cabali and the Tiki Mug Obsession.” The film has been in the works for a little bit now and explores the “history and subculture of tiki mug hunting featuring ‘Fini’ — an obsessed collector opening a tiki bar dedicated to his collection.”

Catamaran Resort Hotel
San Diego, California, United States
Opened in 1958.
A classic tropical resort hotel on Mission Bay. Originally built by the Scripps family as a Spanish Colonial style summer house, the buildings were rebuilt in a Hawaiian Colonial style in the late '50s to better fit in with the tropical grounds. The hotel's been renovated many times since then without losing its Tiki touches.
Throughout the decades, the Evans family has gone to great lengths to import traditional Pacific Island art. All of the ethnic art including spears, personal jewelry, hand-woven rugs, and warrior shields are from New Guinea and were made prior to World War II. As you face the front desk, look above and you will see a very large tapa cloth made of Mulberry bark. It is from the New Hebrides Islands located off the coast of New Guinea. When this piece was commissioned, it was the largest one done since 1920 and took many different island families over a year to make. The wood that makes up the front desk is called Black Koa wood, which is native to the Tahitian Islands. The totem poles throughout the property were handcrafted in Bali specifically for the Catamaran. As you approach the stairs on the way to the Atoll restaurant, look to your left and you will see a large carving encased in glass that looks like a stool. This piece of art is known as the "speaking stool." It was found by Michael Rockefeller in a headhunter village in 1961. This stool is the second largest one known in existence.
Castaways Cove Restaurant and Tiki Bar

Opened November 15th, 2020.
Castaways Cove is located in the basement of River Mountain Lodge, and replaced the old Tiki Mana bar.

Castaway Bar
Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio, United States (Closed)
The Castaway (or "Cast Away" as it was sometimes spelled in advertising) was a bar located just outside of Geneva on the Lake, Ohio on Route 534 (eastside) heading north. South of The Strip although not located in the village, the night club became closely associated with the party scene of The Strip during the 1960s (it was open at least as early as 1963). The owner was James Brown (Jimmy). The entrance to the Castaway was a huge Easter Island Moai with gas flames coming out of its eyes. You entered through its mouth. The bar was destroyed in an arson fire in 1979.
The bar was known for its Go-Go shower dancers and for its live musical acts.
Conway Twitty recorded a live album there called "Conway Twitty Rocks At The Castaway: Geneva-on-the-lake, Ohio; 3rd-9th August 1964".
Caddy's John's Pass - A.K.A. The Hut Bar & Grill
Madeira Beach, Florida, United States
Located along the Historic John's Pass Boardwalk, Caddy's /The Hut Bar & Grill is known as a live music venue with great waterfront views. It was also attached to Skulley's Seafood Restaurant for many years before COVID shutdowns forced a closure and sale to Caddy's.
The Hut has a 15' tall carnival style pass-through tiki head entrance in front which opens to an outside breezeway where you can see a large house-like structure painted brick red with lime green trim -- matching the adjacent restaurant. The interior is a very large hall with some floor-to-ceiling tiki columns.
There is a wood-beamed tin ceiling. Flat screen TVs surround the room just below the ceiling, and along with the beer signs, you quickly realize that despite the exterior this is going to be more of a Florida style surf shack place than a traditional mid-century inspired tiki bar.
They do have some cartoony large molded tiki figures holding bottles but otherwise the decor is typical beer hall with some beach-style surfboard signs and made in Indonesia tiki masks thrown into the mix.
Along the boardwalk in back, you can see the entire top of The Hut's roof is thatched, which is an impressive amount of thatching.
They also have a 70 foot waterfront dock, which extends out into John's Pass for outdoor dining. Customers say it's not uncommon to see dolphins there.
- NOTE: The Hut Bar & Grill was forced to close in the wake of COVID shutdowns. In July 2021, William Karns Enterprises Inc. (headed by Bill Karns, who works with the Caddy’s Restaurant Group) purchased two restaurants along the John’s Pass boardwalk, including the shuttered Sculley’s Waterfront Restaurant and The Hut Bar & Grill from Dag Bros Inc. in a $5 million deal. The Hut Bar & Grill has re-opened under the Caddy's banner as of 2022 with seemingly few visible changes to the location...although presumably the food and beverages have fallen in line with the other locations in the Caddy's chain.
Canoe House
South Pasadena, California, United States
Previously Wild Thyme Restaurant, Canoe House opened in January 2012.
The restaurant design layout features a canoe hanging from the rafters as you would expect. They also have several very nice tiki lamps throughout the building, paddles, Hawaiian art prints, and at least one large Papua New Guinea tiki mask.
Big screen TVs at the bar and throughout the restaurant kill the island ambience somewhat but it brings in a sports crowd.
Food is sort of Hawaiian fusion -- not as high-end as a Roy's -- although you can get herb crusted mahi mahi -- but with a wide variety of sandwiches, burgers, and tacos it feels more like a Hawaiian-styled Applebees.
They have a very limited cocktail menu and don't feature traditional tiki cocktails, but do have an island style mai-tai made with Gosling's and Malibu rum as well as pineapple and orange juice.
The restaurant also has a very nice outdoor patio with a fire pit.
